This was my 5th elk in the past 5 years. It was the quickest, easiest, shortest and biggest elk ever. I killed it with my Ruger MarkII 338 shooting Federal Premium loaded with Barnes 225 TSX. The kill was at about 7:30 a.m. opening morning of the 1st rifle season hunting with Track 'em Outfitters, Bill Canterbury, near Howard, Colorado. The shot was about 55 yards head on in the center of the neck. The bullet was found under the skin while caping the head. Hanging weight of the 4 legs and backstrapes was 277lbs. Then it was off to Wyoming for pronghorn. My uncle and I hunted a unit North of Cheyenne on leftover tags. We each had buck tags and 2 doe tags. The unit shows sufficient state and BLM land. However, most of it is behind fences of large ranches. We were lucky we found a rancher who was more than happy to let us thin the herd that was grazing on his alfalfa. A few hours later we had filled our tags. The goats in the photo were the first ones killed. The range was right at 300. I was shooting a Kimber in 25.06 loaded with Hornady 117 grain Interbonds. My uncle was shooting a Ruger M-II in 257 Roberts loaded with Hornady Super Performance 117 grain SST. All 6 antelope fell in their tracks at ranges from 300 to 150. Plus my uncle killed a coyote. Great trip and a much needed vacation. Perry

Nice work! I'm going to admit that I'm jealous too. Looks like the bullet did it's job. What is the rifle/ammo you are using for pronghorn? Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

Ill bet he dropped like a rock!! That bullet should have exited and not been recovered. You might try reloading your own. Just a rhought Congrats Cal30 If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Cal30, I was surprised the bullet didn't exit. I have used this ammo the past 5 years and in the past all shots have exited on elk except for one shot from 400 yards and that one smashed the rear leg bone just below the hip joint and was recovered in the opposite shoulder. The bullet in the photo above was located directly behind the spine in the center of the neck just under the skin when we made the neck cape cut. I attributed the lack on full penetration on the elacticity of the neck skin. Perry

Congrats on a super hunt. I hope to connect on a bull in the coming weeks, we're hunting the 3rd season. I'm not surprised the bullet didn't exit because it seems as though some of those close high velocity shots don't exit. A few years back, I shot an impala at about 75 yards right on the point of the shoulder and found the bullet in the guts. All other shots on game were complete pass thrus and were at longer distances. Congrats again! Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

Pwn375 I think you are right about the neck hide stretching. I forgot how tough the hide is on the neck. Cal30 If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! The antelope is some of the best wild game I have ever eaten. In past years the ones we killed around Arlington, WY were gamey and strong tasting. Alfalfa fed pronghorns that have not been chased all over the country are fit to eat. Plus we had them dressed, skinned and iced down within an hour of killing them. Perry
