I remember reading a story (with pictures) of a PH who strangled a wounded leopard to death.

Not recommended but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to survive.

What a bunch of wimps at CPW can not even recommend a person carry a decent weapon to protect ones self.

There are many light weight handguns that fit the bill.

+1. Amen, to both parts of the above comment.

And they are not the only ones. This entire country is now at a state where the mention of a gun for self protection is taboo from the left, even if it could save someone’s life, either from wildlife or a human attack. I NEVER go into the mountains unarmed, no matter what the activity is. For that matter, I don’t leave my house unarmed.

The left may be a bunch of wimp-o-dites, but no one needs to listen to them, let alone follow them.

Political correctness can get one killed, and when that stupidity gets antigun laws passed, it’s time to vote those responsible out of office. Please, everyone on this forum who enjoys their right to gun ownership, don’t forget to vote in 2020!

OK, rant off...

p dog shooter +2. And +1 to you, Surefire7

There are cougars in my neck of the woods. Several months ago, one was spotted at the foot of our street (5:30PM!). About 1.5 years ago, one screamed close to a friend’s house (7:00PM). A couple of weeks ago, a motion detector at an acquaintance’s house alerted him in the middle of the night to a cougar that he watched walk around his house. I’m aware of at least 3 other incidents near where we live.

I, too, carry at all times, other than when I’m on the thrown, in the shower or asleep in bed.

I think most of the folks around here are probably more alert to the problem than are the folks in more liberal communities, and we are more likely to take self-defence more seriously than the liberals. I know I am.

You beat me to it. I was going to say that Nick Clark is an obvious alias for Chuck Norris.

Yes even though that Cat weighed 28 pounds doesn't mean it was a piece of cake to dispatch bare handed. Yeah nothing like a 100 pound plus animal but no walk in the park.
Before you argue that go grab your neighbors cat and try to stuff its head in a rubber boot or a small bag. That tame cat would cut you from head to toe if you could even hang on to it.

28,24 whatever...

All those willing to fight a ~25 lb mountain lion, raise their hand.

But first remember the animal felt it could win in a fight with an animal 6 times its size.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I’ve released a couple barn cats from traps...they ain’t no joke. A dam buzzsaw with a powerful magnet attached to your skin. Even when you want it off, you pull it and whatever fangs and claws got ahold of comes with it. It then attaches to the hand or foot you pulled it off with. Laugh and scoff all you want. Tells me you are a greenhorn with zero experience.

I had a barn cat some years ago....he's dead now but I was the only person that could pet him.....and only on his terms.

One day my oldest son decided he wanted to see what he weighed as we guessed him at or near 20 pounds.

He had a friend hold my digital fishing scales....the type with a dangling hook as he (my son) was going to put ol' Scratch in a plastic Walmart bag and hang him on the fishing scale.

Ol' Scratch the barn cat destroyed my oldest son in seconds and left him severely bloodied for his teenage efforts.

In the meantime ol' Scratch just went back to work tending the outside security of my place and only socializing with me and me only.

Cats are strong, fast and equipped with tools mother nature gave them to be effective hunters/killers. A man is no match for an adult mountain lion hand to hand.
