For all of you sheep hunters and those that use light weight rifles, what rifle are you using? I need to get one and I have an idea of what I want, but don't believe it exists off the shelf. I'd like to hear what others hear use for their sheep hunts. What have you done to the rifle and things you wish you would have done or not done. I'm hoping it will give me some ideas about what I should be looking at for a sheep/ibex rifle. Thanks.

Sevens, I know this probably isn't what you're looking for, but my "sheep" rifle is a 275 Rigby (7X57 Mauser). Mine is a little heavy, built with a 24" Douglas barrel on a trued up CZ24 Mauser action, with a 6x45 Seeadler scope. To be honest if I was going to use one for mountain hunting I would probably shorten the barrel to 22" and get a lighter stock, I've got a Bell and Carlson on it now. It's fine for hunting in Texas, the ranch I shot this one at has elevation changes from about 1150' to 2830', but I imagine it would be a little heavy in the high country.

I know, I shot him a little bit high. I had to go down a creek bed to get close enough for a shot and had to stand to get above the tall grasses, still couldn't shoot any lower because of all the brush in the way.

270WSM is nice. 24" Lilja barrel, McMillan stock, 140 Accubond, or 150 Partition.
