Any here hunted Starkey for Spring bear? My buddy and I have drawn tag this year. Not knowing the area, I'm looking for pointers. The caveat is that my buddy is in a wheelchair and hunts off a quad. So we'll need to be in an area with open roads.

We'll call the biologist that covers the unit, but would like to hear from others as well.

Looking at the unit map, the southern section north of FSR-52 looks like it has good access. But what about bears..?

Thanks!

-Steve

I haven't hunted it for spring bear but I have for elk.
A guy in our party took a nice bear last year off of Tybow Creek. Access is relatively easy.
Good luck!

Good Luck. I didn't draw this year and took a preference point. I'm hoping to draw next year.
I'll settle for fall bear now.

Best to Ya.

Thanks! At least the preference points don't expire anymore if you don't keep applying.

Steve,

The preference points don'texpire anymore?

I have been building deer and elk points for several years in Oregon but in the last couple forgot to apply. I didn't screw myself?

From page 12 of the '2008 Oregon Big Game Regulations':

  • Starting in 2008, hunters will not forfeit their preference points if they do not apply for a hunt series for two or more consecutive years. Preference points remain in the system until they are redeemed.
  • Applicants who have their license suspended by legal action will forfeit all preference points.
  • Youth participating in the Mentored Youth Hunting Program will receive one mentored youth preference point for each year the youth registers for the program See pages 16-17.

Don't know if you're screwed or not, though.
