My brother is being stationed at 29 Palms in California. He is a Sgt in the Marine Corps and is back from Japan (Iwakuni). We were raised in different house holds a lot of the time so he doesn't have the hunting background that I do but he does hunt and is trying to get into it more.
Does anyone know where he can hunt with in a couple hours drive from 29 Palms? He'd like to hunt deer, elk, antelope, hogs or what ever is available. CA, AZ, NV etc. Once he gets back to
TX it won't be a problem but he'd like to hunt while he's there.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

Deer and bear season is over in CA now. As for Elk or Antelope you might as well forget about those. It will be easier to win the lottery then to draw a tag with 0 points. But your brother is close to a lot of pig guides with year around hunting. The Tejon Ranch is probably the biggest and most famous in that area.

I would guess that a active service member would have more than 0 points. Confused bewildered

I’m not sure, but I don’t think they (CA DF&G) have special points for active service members. But I forgot that some bases allow active service men (or women) to hog hunt on the base property. That can save your brother $500-$800. But the down side is they don’t allow civilians to join them.

And the tag system in CA is impossible. I have max points for every animal and have yet to draw any tag in 10 years.

Tell your brother to check out Fort Hunter Liggett and Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Good luck. beer

They allow active duty hunters to buy and apply as residents. That saves a them lot of $ and helps their chances of getting drawn. The real problem is the numbers. When you have 4 million people applying for a same one tag – its hard to get drawn.

At 29 stumps you can hunt scorpions, black widows and rattle snakes. You might even catch a case of the crabs!

I was stationed at Camp Pendelton, and deer hunting was allowed there. Long time ago, and it is a bit of a drive from 29 stumps. Casey Springs was a place to check out on the base. Other than that, I hunted the National forests, Angeles right out of LA, Also up by Lake Arrowhead, and Big Bear. Also up in the Sierras. There also were deer and pigs in the Chocolate mountains east of Barstow.
Good luck to your brother and Semper Fi

when i was in 29 stumps (30 trs ago)i did hunt snakes scorpions and big hairy spiders and made damn good money selling them to the pet stores in san bernadino.
please tell your brother thank you for his service and he is in some of the best coyote calling country there is and desert fox and good quail and if he does some research and relocates the desert springs i have forgotten how to get to there are some decent desert mulies around, not many but enough to warrent a long weekend searching/scouting.
helped this wyoming boy pass 3yrs of hot, DAMN HOT (did i mention it was HOT)usmc duty.
while there i came up with some great hunting technics like spotlighting coyotes and shooting them with tracers out of an old beatup 308,hides wern't worth anything, especially after lighting them on fire with the tracers!
i understand thou that spotlighting is no longer legal in california.
hunting women in the stumps was pretty tough,
hell you didn't lose your woman you just lost your turn!!!!
