Gentleman, Is Colorado the only state with over the counter nonresident elk/deer permits? The other two states I have checked are Montana and Wyoming, both have a nonresident deadline of March 15th. I realize it is a little late in the year to be planning a hunt, but I just got confirmation this week I will be able to hunt this fall/winter. Gracias....Frank

Frank, As far as I know, Colorado is the only state to issue unlimited BULL elk rifle tags and either sex elk archery tags for most units in the state. However, all of the deer tags are now limited and issued by computerized draws and the deadline for that was Apr 04. If you look on the Colorado Divison of Wildlife website, you will note that any tage not issued in the drawing are available in Aug on a first come first serve basis. Mac ------------------

Colorado will have over the counter bull and cow tags this year, but deer tags are drawing only, and the deadline is past. [This message has been edited by 375hnh (edited 05-01-2002).]

Idaho has a number of areas with over the counter elk and deer tags. Of course, the wolves ate the elk and deer, but you're welcome to buy a tag..... Dutch.

MAC & 375, Thanks for the reply, according to the website the rifle seasons are in Oct. and I will be out of the country. The late season is Deer only east of I-25, but I will need to come up with a tag. Is there a good herd in the East? I am not looking for horns, but meat for the freezer. Dutch, I tried to find the seasons on Idaho's website, but could only find License fees. Do you know if there is a season open in those areas in November and if so will they be accessible that late in the year? Norseman, Oregon is a long drive, but I will check their website and the seasons. Thanks to all you for your help, it has been 4 yrs since I have been on a rifle hunt and my neck is already starting to swell up. Saludos...Frank

Gringo, November is really too late for most seasons, but there are quite a few cow hunts you could still apply for, as well as a few bull hunts (terrible odds on most bull and buck draw hunts). The full regs are at: http://www2.state.id.us/fishgame/common/regulations/bg/bigame.htm HTH, Dutch.

Frank, I live in the north east part of Colorado. There are some huge bucks in the area, but the tags are kind of hard to get. It usually takes a couple of prefernce points. But if all you want is meat, the doe tags for the late season are usually available. One problem is that most of the land is private. I have an old family friend that lets me hunt on his ranch, but I'm the only one he lets do that. There are some special late season cow elk hunts that run clear into Jan or Feb that are not too hard to get. You have to be ready for some miserable weather though. Mac ------------------

Call Montana. Teir deadline was March 15, but they did not sell all of their tags. They are available on a "first come, first serve" basis now. I am not sure which tags are available, but worth checking into. ------------------
