Ahh Choices Choices.. Trying to decide is more than half the fun I think. That and all the load development I have been doing all summer.

Anyway...

I am going to northern Idaho hunting whitetails only this fall. I have the following rifles and loads worked out(below). They all shoot consistent sub 1" groups at 100yrds. I am hunting with my brothers and from what they say shots could range from 50 - 300+ yrds. Which one would you take?

1 - Weatherby Vanguard synthetic in 300 Wby mag shooting 150 gr Accubonds at ~3250 fps.

2 - Ruger Compact 7mm-08 stainless shooting 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips at ~2800 fps.

3 - Ruger Compact 7mm-08 (same) shooting 140 gr Nosler Accubond at ~2700 fps.

4 - Browning A-Bolt synthetic with Bell Carlson stock in 270 shooting 140 gr. Accubond at ~2950 fps.

5 - Browning A-Bolt 270 (same) shooting Hornady Interlock 140 gr. at ~2900 fps.

I have a Leupold 2.5 x 10 x 50 Vari-X III going on the lucky gun. Please stick to these options.. as these are the ones that I have been doing load development on all summer.

Four and Five, same rifle type, presumably LOP and operational features make #5 the natural backup. 270 AB's is good juju on whitetails.

Good Luck--Don

To me I'd take the one I am the most intimate with end of story.

I would imagine all of them you can work with but then you know you can make things happen with is the deal! Especially when things are not going in your favor.

My choice is 5,3,4

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I would take #1 first choice or #4 second choice.

Personally I would take a heavier bullet if I thought shots would be 300+ .

#1 unless you don't shoot it as well as the other two in field positions, then I would take a 270.

Like the others said, take the one that is the most comfortable too you.

I always take the one I have the most confidence in.

I'm with Reloader on this. #1 and #4. In that order.

There's no denying all would work fine to 350 yards or more. But, that Weatherby/150 combo will shoot very flat. Do you have one of these?:

angle cosine indicator

I have 3 270s and love them, and usually one always makes it on one of my trips, sometimes as primary, and sometimes as backup.

Regardless of you choice, please give everyone an update when you're back!

Jkelly295: I would take #4 along with you for this Hunt. Your brothers are right regarding the varied distances you may be shooting at!
The last time I Hunted Whitetails up there I saw a herd of Caribou up near the Canadian Border. Keep your eye out for them!
I also remember having to cut my 10 day Hunt a couple of days short due to incessant rain eventually getting my sleeping bag and blankets wet!!! I was camping in my pickup truck with a canopy on it.
The air can be very MOIST up that a way!
I hope you have better conditions than I did on my last trip there!
Good luck Game wise also!

Mark, you're making entirely too much sense... problem, as I see it, is the bloke doesn't have the rig scoped so your observation, while totally true, is probably wasted. Personally, I can't fathom taking an internet poll on what rifle to use for anything, let alone on a whitetail...

Didn't say I did not currently have them all scoped. I have a Burris Fullfield II on the Ruger and leupold Vari-x III's on the others. Just figured if I decided to take the ruger I would put one of the leupolds on it because I like them better. I have probably shot at least 1500 rounds through these rifles since March and swappped scopes, new stocks, and tried multiple loads/powders.... And I loved every minute of it.

I have all but decided on the 270 A-bolt for the reason most of you had mentioned. I just plain like to shoot it the most. The ruger I like to carry the most though. It is one handy rifle and very recoil friendly despite its small size. The Weatherby is probably the most accurate but I shoot it only slightly better than the 270 on average. Maybe I will just have to get a four gun case (gotta take a shotgun too!) and take them all.

Might as well go with the flattest shooting load, all else being equal. I vote for #1.

My vote would be for 4 & 5. I use a Winchester pre 64 70 in a Bell& Carlson stck with a Leupold 2x7 and 130 grain bullets.
