That's an interesting question. It seems that there is a 270 fanatic crowd that swears by anything in the caliber. Most people seem to prefer the added versatility (e.g., heavier bullets) of the 7MM caliber. That .277 caliber 140 Grain Failsafe at 3200 FPS is going to be something else, though.
I do firmly believe, and swear, that the short pups will displace the really big boomers and do so in short order. The big guns will amount to missed game at long range brought on by flinch, and hence, the precieved need to a more accurate round.

Roger, at least where the .308" bore is concerned, it's my belief that if someone can't handle a 300 Win Mag they probably won't be able to handle a 300 WSM either, in which case the 30-06, or better yet, 308 Win, will be adequate, and for some applications, better. Wow, that was the "mother" of all run-on sentences!
Wapi-T... I handled a stainless 270 WSM at Scheels Sporting Goods in Billings last night as well as the cartridges... neat!
Just picked one up for the local MDF banquet. Laminated version. Feels solid, checked the action carefully...should be sweet! I wonder how the .270 WSM will recoil when compared to the .270 WIN. (???)
The recoil is probably like that of a 7mm Rem Mag or a 264 Win Mag. Not bad at all. I agree that if you can't handle the recoil of a 300 win then you could be served very well with a 30-06 and newer factory loads (if you don't reload) or better yet, a 308. Especially if you are just hunting white tails.
The WSM's and SAUM's are just smoke and mirrors with the marketing. But there is nothing new there.
My old belted magnums are just fine. Some of them don't headspace as well as a 30/06 but I like the rifles they are in and I own them.
But I would not buy another new belted magnum rifle! I might buy a nice used one if it were a good deal but as far as I am concerned the belted magnums are history.
I rever the .375 H&H also. I think it's a historic cartridge but even it may loose ground someday to a better design.
If I were to buy my first rifle it would be a 30/06. If I felt the want for a "magnum" it would be a .300 WSM right now but I am looking forward to the success of other calibers on the WSM case. I am considering a 7mm WSM. Also a .375 on a 3.3" COL RUM case would be of interest.
No hurry. I have the belted magnums and am "stuck" with them.
