Do your research carefully. I've done it twice and never fired a shot either time.

I own Colpark Outfitters and we offer guided horseback hunts in Colorado, if you are a rifle hunter you need preference points. Unit 49 has the second largest bull to cow ratio in the state of Colorado 51 bulls for every 100 cows!

The problem with Horse Back hunts is simple; Almost every outfitter I know rarely leaves camp in the dark. The outfitters are too scared some "dude" will have major problems while on the horse.

I hunt a general area in Wyoming and we take our own horses/mules 9 miles back in to make camp and hunt elk. I never see the outfitter in the area leave camp before it is light enough to see. They seem to have a 50% success rate, with most bulls on the small side. You always see them riding back to camp about 45 minutes before dark. Their hunters are always missing out on the best times to hunt.

Research is key. Ask them if you will be riding in the dark. If the answer is no, then you are loosing the best hunting time.

It's been several years, but I hunted 3 times with Triangle X Ranch, Moose, WY...just outside of Jackson.

They were a top knotch outfit... good horses, got elk each hunt and even deer if the hunt dates are right. The camps were good and believe me, we definitely left camp before dawn and got back well after dark!!!!

I would definitely recommend them http://www.trianglex.com/hunt.htm Although, as I said it's been a few years.

I can recommend an exceptional outfitter in NM but you must draw to hunt. He will help you thru the process. You will be one on one in all likelihood and the country is exceptional. I will handle via PM only as I do not, well you will get the point!

I also have a very good outfit in Wyoming, you'll pack into the Wind River Range. They run a main tented camp and at least two spike camps. It's a true western hunt experience, they do pretty well on the elk. You'll ride plenty.

You guys that went on several horseback hunts and didn't fire a shot.

Did you get to hunt? That's what I thought folks bought when they went on guided hunts.

I had a good hunt in Utah with:

Wasatch Outfitters
5258 West Frontier Drive, Mtn Green, Utah 84050
LOCATION: Northern Utah
SPECIES HUNTED: Elk, Deer, Shiras Moose, Mtn Lion
Come join us for the Elk and/or Mule deer hunt of a lifetime. Care tosee 25 - 40 elk per day during the rut plus "shooter" bulls each day? Plenty of trophy mule deer as well. Extremely high success rate (100% in 98) on 300 + point bulls, and 160 + point deer. All this at a very competitive price. Hunt with us and you will understand our slogan "The Buck Stops Here". Also available are fishing & summer pack trips, photo shoots, and snowmobile trips.

That's why it's called hunting. To me what you are paying for if you go on a guided hunt is the expertise of someone who knows the area and game and who can provide the stock and equipment needed. One of the most physically challenging and rewarding hunts I've ever done was a guided horseback elk hunt that I came home empty handed from. Absolutely busted my butt, learned a ton, saw lots of game, spent time in incredible country, and had a blast. That hunt ignited my passion for hunting in the mountains and is one of my best memories. More so than many hunts since in which I have killed animals.

I can recommend Dellis and Linda Ferrier of Hotchkiss/Paonia Colorado. He was running about 60% success rate when I hunted with him in 2001(??) My brother John has taken a nice elk with him on all three trips he's gone. I went once and only got a mule deer, as did my brother Dan.

You will be on horseback in the dark.

He hunts the West Elk Wilderness Area between Paonia and Gunnison. The country is worth the trip, IMHO. He hunts black powder and rifle seasons.

I'll go back after I hunt Africa again.

I get NOTHING for endorsing Dellis, so I don't care if you say Hi from me or not!

I have been on some horse elk hunts,N.M. /Colorado border , mostly leased private land.Idaho Frank Church , probably the largest wilderness in the US to hunt.Lots of outfitters.Though I brought meat home each time, trophies are tough come by.I here the Frank Church ,like most public land is way overhunted.
I have followed ads/pictures for some outfitters in Alberta/Canada for elk.Might be worth it.
Outfitted elk hunts that are even mediocre aint cheap. My very first guided hunt, for elk in MT was a nice ride in the park, dont know why we carried rifles. As some maintain - thats hunting - for them. For me it was a rip-off.
I learned and check references since.

I hunted with Boulder Creek Outfitters, Tim Craig, back in the late 80's, in the Selway country of Idaho; hunted hard for 7 days, got a 6 point at the bottom of a NASTY canyon on the 7th day of an 8 day hunt. Our group of 4 went 2 consectutive years with this outfit, we got a total of 2 bulls... However, the country is spectacular and truly wild, food was good, guides were fair to great, all in all is was a great experience. I was 19 at the time, and both myself and the other guy who got the other bull, also 19, hunted harder than the other hunters (our fathers...), hence the elk. Long story short, you've got to be prepared to really hunt hard, and we did leave well before daylight...

Craig Nolan
