I caught a pretty my good buck on my Cuddeback camera again this weekend. He is the same one I got a photo of three weeks ago. It is amazing how fast those antlers grow. Here is a picture from three weeks ago. Here is the same deer yesterday

Thank you so much for the unexpected invitation to hunt him. What date and airport, again... I missed that part of the message! JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

How about two NEF Partners in .45/70 taped together? They'd look better than a Blaser S2, anyway. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Duct tape, I presume? | |||

Wow, nice buck. I am amazed at the feed loss??? What is causing you to spill so much feed on the ground? Are your deer just sloppy or is it wind loss? How is your coon trap working? I look forward to the next picture of him. I like to see the progression of the antlers.

M16: I hate to be the "victim" of such a good "gotcha"! I do have a good chance for a great whitetail this fall. A great friend of 20 years invited me to hunt with him in Manitoba this November. He has been guiding for whitetails for close to 30 years and has had his own service for 15. I was his first client and it was the most screwed up hunt I've ever been on. I left and the next four client killed a 144, a 152, a 154 and a 176 (all net) B&C bucks. Since that year (he now has 15 tags), one of his hunters has taken a B&C buck every year... pretty good odds for B&C... one in 15??? My invite is for his cost... Anyone want to join me... it's during blackpowder season.. November 6th is the first day. A p.m if you're interested? Thanks for the invite Judge but the Texas season opens on that date. That sounds like a really great hunt. The NEF partners taped together is very appealing but I am not a 45-70 fan.

Wendell, I guess a picture is worth a thousand words. Most of the spillage is from coons but there is also a little blackbird that likes to sit on the feeder shelf all day and scratch feed out. We usually shut them off for a week and the deer will clean the feed up in that time. If you get a rain it will be ruined. I haven't done that on this one because I don't want this buck to go one minute without feed. I have trapped and shot over 30 coons this year but they are still a problem. This buck was a 150 class 5.5 year old last year with 17 points.

Well, I guess a Westley Richards double rifle swap for the busk is a pretty decent deal for you. You might ask the Judge to throw in another $K or so ... you know, big Deer are big money! Maybe if you are feeleing generous, just take the rifle and do not get greedy. My camera is on the fritz right now. It is dealing with performace anxiety. It will work in the house, but when you put it at the feeder, it siezes up. There must be a really big deer to scare the camera that bad! I will see if I can post some recent photos.

Would it be safe to assume that the large buck in the first photograph has a ready place on the wall next spring? Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

Maybe. If when he finishes growing and he is 180+ he may get shot. Although he is a pretty good way from the neighbors fence there is always the possibility that they could shoot him. Normally though when you locate one this time of the year he will stay in that area until the rut in december. Then all bet's are off as to how far he might travel. He should be 6.5 years old this year and in his prime. But it has been real dry lately so he may get another year. Sometimes they peak at 7.5 or even 8.5 with supplemental feeding.

I have heard people say dry years make them eat more protein and grow better antlers. I winder if this is true? But then again, I have heard people say a lot of stupid things. Like anything else, I must sort through the BS to see if this is valid. I do think I am feeding a lot more protein this year than I did last year. Quite a bit more. Sure, there are more deer, but I think the feed consumption is past what should be expected with the increase in herd size. Some studies on deer age as it effects antler growth show 5.5-6.5 is the optimum time to harvest. There is also proof that a lot of deer will regress after this stage, but some continue to improve, sometimes dramatic improvements, which sometimes results in the deer adding more points. I guess deer are like people, everyone is different. You can never tell what one will be the next year if you kill him this year. I have a prime example of this in a Red Deer that I considered a candidate for a cull last year. I will try to post pictures.

This Stag was a very nice 6x6 last year. I did not like his antlers, he was missing his second tine on one of his antlers (considered a negative characteristic) I thought, "Maybe I will have someone hunt him next year." I think I have changed my mind. He still has a lot of growing left to do. He is only 4 years old. He has not developed any of his tines yet, but you can see he will be impressive.
