What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Hey Mike, you left for the promised land, quit rubbing it in!

I killed an antelope in central Wyoming at 5:45 on August 15th. As I dragged it out with the sun rising and the temps at 80+ all I could think was, "didn't I leave CA to get out of this A zone stuff."

At least here the landowners like hunters.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I've seen 1 little legal buck on my place so far this year. Not worried, last year was the same and I ended up with 2 three pointers.
Saw 10 deer last night, all does and fawns except for 1 little buck.
Just have to wait for the acorns to drop and the rut to start for the big boys to show themselves.

Here is my buck, it would have been really nice if it was symmetrical, but it had some kind of deformity on the one side.

Weird thing it is still in velvet and the little forked horn that was with it was in velvet as well.

I only shoot one buck a year so I am done, I have never shot one this early and it feels weird to have deer season over for me.

Anyway it will stock the fridge.

First I love non typicals and you are right, that right side if duplicated on the left would make it a dandy.

Was it taken with the 7mm-08?

No the 7mm-08 is sitting in the safe waiting for my daughter to be ready to hunt. It will be hers.

I shot it with my go to rifle, it is a 25-06 that I built on a FN Mauser. My wife bought me the action while we were still dating. We saw the rifle at a gun shop and I really wanted it so I could build a 25-06 but couldn't afford it at the time so I passed it up.

My wife went back and bought it and kept it under her bed for six months until Christmas, then she gave it to me as a Christmas present.

I built a 25-06 on it and it has been my favorite rifle since.

Brad,
That's weird. All the bucks I've seen around here shed their velvet early like mid July this year.
Mike,
Here is the second deer from last year. I had not seen him before and it was late in the season so I think he showed up lookin' for love.

Jim, I think the deer have a hard time getting excited about it also. Big Grin Around here they seem to wait until sometime in September before they show themselves.

Nice buck Brad. That one is interesting.

Russ, You're right, when your acorns drop they might show themselves better.

We've been seeing a buck or two here and there. A client took a fork on Thursday, but while he wanted the head taken to the taxidermist he didn't want pictures so I don't have any photos.

My client for Monday can't get out of jury duty so it looks like we'll have to postpone that hunt.

There have been several good ones on the trail cameras, but they've been pretty nocturnal lately.

Not that I'm tired of helping people look for pigs, but it's sure fun to chase something different for a few hunts.

Late Monday afternoon a young lady got her first buck on one of my hunts. While she's just getting into hunting (thanks to her fiancé), she's very familiar with firearms and has done three tours in Iraq.

Then right after sunset on the same day she got her first pig. Another one shot kill.

The buck was tucked away in some deadfall and her fiancé spotted his antlers. We could only see part of his neck, part of his face and the top of his antlers. She did an amazing job threading a bullet through the limbs to take out his spine.

She used a 700 in .308 with a Leupold 4.5x14 and GMX bullets.

The enthusiasm of new hunters is terrific!
