I was fidgeting around wondering what to take on my elk hunt this fall besides the trusty old .30-06 and 180 grain A-Frames when I discovered this box of bullets from years ago.....

Ive never fired any of Barnes bullets and don't really have a feeling for performance so please tell me folks if this bullet coming from a .375 H&H is a good thing to cause an elk to die.

More that enough bullet for Elk. The only complaint I have ever had with Barnes X bullets is in higher speed loads they tend not to do as much tissue damage as some softer bullets. Tend to zip right through an animal with out as much shock put to the flesh.
Just my finding, I'm sure I will be well schooled on others findings shortly.

But I do use them alot in my 308.&338 win.

Fantastic Elk bullet. I use a 270 grain in my 375, and my gun loves that round. Shoots it quite well.

I've got a partial box of their 235 grainers. These have been used successfully on elk here in Colorado. Never recovered one, even after hitting shoulder bone.

I have killed a few things with 300gr, .375 bullets, no elk though, and they preformed excellent. I like barnes, but to pricey for me. THey preform like a broadhead, sharp petals, and retain thier wieght well. If you need some more I might have a partial box of the .300's I can send you. I no longer have my .375.

I am still a Hornady man, must be my roots!

If one were to insist a 250gr bullet was necissary to make an Elk Die, one could equally argue that a .375caliber rifle to launch said bullet would also be appropriate.

Frankly I'd rather have a 375H&H loaded with 250's than a 338mag with smaller diameter 250's

but that's largely a function of the simple fact that I've never actually shot a 338mag that shot 250's worth a damn.

Thus my personal belief that a 338mag is at it's best (for any use) with a 210 or 225gr.

Must admit I am a bit shocked that you would go after Elk with such an Adequate Cartridge and Bullet when your Hero uses a 223Rem. Wink

You can kill anything you want with a 375 and 250 grain X Bullets. I also think that if you wanted to get converted to the Barnes Bullets you would try the Triple Shock or The Tipped Triple Shock. You may not have any issues with the ones you have but the new ones offer some definite advantages. My .270 and .338 Win both shoot Triple Shocks into less than an inch and I don't have any issues with barrel fouling. I guess you can tell I am a fan. DW

vapodog,

I'd get a box of TSX in 250 gr and 270 gr and see which shoots the best. The lighter 375 TSX's have made the 338 caliber mags unecessary in my opinion. I've used the 270 gr TSX to take quite a bit of game so far. They just work beautifully and are deadly accurate in my rifle.
