I´m going to Ohio to participate in the World benchrest championships in Sep. It would be great to be able to do some hunting after the match! What´s the suggestions for a foreinger to hunt this time of year? Varmints would be great and any kind of deer would be really great. Is it possible to get something done within resonable time and not spending a fortune?

There is probably a few guys from the Swedish benchrest team that would like some hunting after the match is over. Some of us will probably rushing to get home though. The opening day for moose here in Sweden is during the match week

Stefan: There's not too much available in the way of rifle hunting in September (if you're a wingshooter, mourning dove is open). In many states deer archery season is open. But in most areas, rifle seasons for deer, elk, etc. don't start until October and November.

If you want to hunt in the neighborhood of Ohio, maybe someone could set you up with a woodchuck hunt. Futher west, you could shoot prairie dogs all day long. And of course in most places there is no closed season on coyotes.

Otherwise, non-game exotics like sika and axis on private land, or a trip to the West Coast or Alaska where blacktail season opens early would be your most likely big game choices.

Sure! Antelope (pronghorn)! I forgot that most states' pronghorn seasons start in September. Check the various states (MT, WY, CO, SD, ND, ID, NM, TX) game department websites for season and license information.

Another option might be to see is someone can do a lion or a black bear hunt with hounds.

Idaho has some depredation style hunts that time of year for elk. Nothing too exciting, but usually reasonably high success rate.

Doesn't Montana have an over-the-counter sheep hunt that time of year, too?

One off-the wall suggestion (takes time and isn't exactly cheap.....) is to take a Wilderness float trip down the Salmon River in Idaho. Deer season would be open in the wilderness, the river isn't very crowded (8 groups per day?), and it is a 4 to 5 day float through some of the most scenic country you'll ever see. Everyone should do it at least once.

You'd have a reasonable chance at both black bear and deer on the trip. Plus uncountable chukars..... HTH, Dutch.
