My oldest son has caught the hunting bug.

Last year when going thru the potty training phase. We asked him what he wanted as a prize if he didn't have any accidents for 5 days. He chose to go hunting with Dakota, my bird dog. I took him to a pheasant hunting club after their season was over with and we managed to flush and shoot a hen pheasant after about 2.5 hours of stomping thru the brush.

In October we went after antelope with some buddies after I had filled my doe tag.

You can ready about our hunt here: Antelope Hunt

After the antelope hunt he asked if he could go elk hunting with me. I had to turn him down for that hunt, but told him we would go deer hunting when we went home to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving.

Well, yesterday afternoon was the big day. We set up a ground blind, or as Case calls it the "Hunting Tent" on one of our alfalfa fields. I had dad move a couple round bales to the edge so we could set up the "Hunting Tent" between the two.

Our view:

We made sure to bring along the nook to pass the time. We both got pretty good at a couple of the games to pass the time. Then, we had to do something constructive, so we worked on spelling and word recognition.

Just at last light. This buck walked out in front of us. I asked Case if we should shoot him and it was a definate "Yes".

One shot with the 243 Win and 80 grain TTSX and as Case put it, "Daddy! You shot a monster buck!"

While we were admiring our prize, he said, "This is the best day ever, because I got to ride on the 4-wheeler and we got a BIG buck Dad!" I would have typically passed on this type of buck, but I wouldn't trade this deer for the Oklahoma state record!!!

I hope you enjoy as much as I have and will!!!

looks like a Monster Buck to me

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

It doesn't matter what you think. He knows that is a monster buck, and that is better than shooting a real monster buck by yourself!

I can only imagine being his age again and getting to do all that.

Let me ask you, if I go for 5 days without an accident, can I have those round bales of alfalfa? Big Grin

Seriously ... Can I?

Thanks everyone! Happy to report my buddy Snellstrom's son shot his first buck tonight. A nice 7 point. I'll leave the story to him.

Thanks again everyone! I'm happy to report we have another first time huntress taking her first deer. More to come in the coming days, but this year was all about the kids!

Great hunt report - excellent to see the next generation of hunters getting off to a great start. My hat's off to you for getting the youngsters started properly.

Very nice. Glad you are able to do that.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.
