PHurley: How DO you get 2900fps out of your 300 Winie with 200gr bullets? I sure would like your recipe! BTW, my NEW WBY Accumark in 340 Weatherby came in today. Can't wait to go pick it up! jorge

I remember an article by Dave Hetzler in a magazine several years ago. He said he was asked what gun he would chose if he could only have one and he answered the 30-06. But he said "...as he got older and saw more animals put on the ground he was coming around to Elmer Keith's way of thinking." He said he might rethink the answer and say the 338 Win.. I think Elmer was probably right too. I've always liked the big calibers. You know even the 338 looks a little small when you start thinking about a 10 foot bear. Doug

jorge -- At the time I was loading 68 to 70 grains of IMR-4350 with a Fed 215 primer. Note that is near or over max for the Nosler book, start lower, as you see fit. My brass showed no signs of pressure. Today I would use RL-22. I got a one shot kill, hitting the Bear in the chest as it was standing and facing me. You don't gut the big Bears, and don't eat the meat, therefore I didn't open the body cavity, from the exterior bleeeding evidence I assumed it pulvarized it's heart, and probably lodged in the backbone. It didn't wiggle another muscle after the shot. Good shooting
I have talked to a couple of the hunters now. Both of them used 338 win mags. They said the 338 had no trouble putting them down with a 250 nosler. One Bear in the picture at the back left side was a neat bear. He was the shortest of the bunch but was hell bent for stout. His head was the second largest. His weight was close to the rest. He was just shorter. I would liked to have made this hunt. Ron
Nice Bear pics: To anyone thinking about carrying a pistol for Bear protection while in Ak.,imagine one of them suckers standing up on his hind legs 50-100 feet in front of you, snapping his teeth and slobber coming out of his mouth.Think you have the cajones to hold a good sight picture? If so, I want to hunt with you. You are fearless. Forget the pistol, get a 12 gauge pump. oo or ooo buck. The point is not to penetrate and drop him on the spot, the point is to blind him so he can't find you. Even with the slippery stuff running down your leg and your normally cool nerves shot to hell, maybe you can hit him with it. You can then either run like hell or finish him off and argue with the Wardens.
