Eastmans versus Kuiu lawsuit

Kuiu (owned by the originator of Sitka gear) is suing Eastman's journal for falsifying their circulation numbers to boost advertising cost.

I have been reading a bit about this, but don't know what to think. It is interesting.

I'll say this. I have been a regular subscriber to Eastman's Hunting Journal for most of my life, and own some gear made or sold by Kuiu.

Most of Kuiu's stuff is sized to fit someone who is more athletic than I am, so I wouldn't say I am a big fan. No knock on quality.

I get Eastman's Journal mostly because it is based out of my beloved Wyoming and it is a OK source of information for the draws. I also subscribe to the "Hunting Fool" stuff, and I think it is better. Eastman's own firearm product review and technical articles are completely shit. I have sent multiple emails to Guy to complain about it over the years. He hires people that can't write, and don't know anything about firearms to write technical articles about complex issues.

The biggest news in this is that Kuiu is trying to smear Eastman's for falsifying sales readership information in an effort to stop all magazines from doing this.

I went and did more research and found out that Eastman's Journal had a suit against Kuiu for not paying advertising cost. So who knows what the real scoup is.

Watching with anticipation.

Interesting...
I've subscribed for several years as well and enjoy their publication (and agree with your other comments)
One thing I will say is that Eastmans has sure promoted Kuiu well for a while now, so I suppose it's all about the numbers...
Should be aweful easy to prove either way I would think.

Virtually every magazine published and distributed in the U.S. uses the U.S. Postal Service to deliver copies to subscribers.

To maintain second-class (publication) rates, the publisher must submit an annual statement showing how many copies are printed and how/where they are distributed.

Publishers are periodically audited by USPS to see that maximum percentages of editorial/advertising ratios, throwaways and non-paid copies are not exceeded.

The annual statement also must be published in the magazine, which means the information is widely available.

Advertisers buy space based on a publication's "cost per thousand." If the readership numbers Eastman's ad salesmen provided Kuiu were "stretched, this should have been apparent to Kuiu's ad agency early on.

I didn't want to waist a lot of time on it, but I did find it interesting as my family knew Gordon Eastman (as we were based out of Dubois, Riverton and Driggs Idaho. Gordon was mostly based out of Jackson Hole (before the millionaires moved in circa 1960's, and the billionaires pushed them out 1980's).

I have also been a long time subscriber to the magazine, and was excited about Kuiu the product until I figured out it wouldn't fit my obese (name a body part). I am 5'11 and 250, maybe if I was under 200?.

Anyway it appears to be a counter-lawsuit based on the money that is owed by Kuiu to Eastmans.

Bill is right, apparently the advertising folks at Kuiu didn't do their homework, or lied about it.

I don't have a dog in the fight and my comment is just to agree. I'm 5'11" at 190 lbs and the size 2xl is too small for me. "Athletic build" is right and hardly describes my frame. Good looking stuff if a guy can fit into it.

Good to know, thanks Zeke. I ordered two t-shirts from their discount page. If they don't fit, I'll give them to my co-worker who is a crossfitter.
