My grandfather built custom Mausers when I was growing up so that was what I preferred- nothing better than a custom rifle totally tweaked in whatever caliber you desire. Unfortunately I didn't continue in his footsteps- I now wish I had. He preferred the quality of German & Austrian weapons. For this reason, my favorite, out of the box shooter are the Steyrs. My current one is a Steyr-Mannlicher Model-M Pro in 30.06.

Of all the American makers I still love Winchester better than the Remingtons- but I agree that you get a better rifle if you buy a CZ- they just do it better unless you get a Remington or Winchester out of the custom shops.

The best bang for your buck IS! the Savage. Incredible accuracy for the dollar- the best there is. They just don't have that hand finish of the Rems, Winchesters- now moving up to the CZ etc...

With all of that said- I wouldn't buy anything out of the box but a Steyr. Beyond that it would be a custom Mauser98 like my grandfather built....

I like both 700s (and especially 721s and 722s) and 70s. I generally prefer the Rems. Have obtained better accuracy from these factory rifles than from the Winchesters I have owned, and this includes dozens of each. Never had any problems with 700 (or 721 or 722) extractors, although I did have a problem with the extractor on a pushfeed model 70.

CZ's are made in the Czech Republic. (a NATO country that has troops on the ground in Iraq, btw.) I've had half a dozen of them without a problem and have a .458 Lott ordered.

Hey Wstrnhuntr- not to steal the thread/change the topic
I wish Steyr would make me a 20"ProHunter stainless in 300WSM- would be soooo kewl....
damn I love Steyrs.. wish my granddad was still around- he'd probably sold the laths, the mill, & dumped the blueing vat- taken the money and we could of had a Steyr collection...
