Not sure where to ask this so ill try here.

Do any of you own and/or use Marlin/Ruger carbine in 9mm or 45ACP,if so do you hunt them??

I'm thinking of buying one to cull feral goats with,as i can own a rifle like this with 7 shot on my A class firearms licence, rifles like AR15 or any other semi auto with a mag bigger than 7 rounds i need a new licence, join a club boohoo

Most shots will be under 100 yards.

Gidday James,

A more versatile outfit would possibly be a SMLE or no4 loaded with .32 pistol bullets. A guy I know uses them and they knock goats on their bums as quick as anything else.

He keeps a spare magazine in his pocket and he can get away 20 shots pretty quickly.

Just a thought if the semi auto route doesn't work out.

Happy Hunting

I have a hi-point carbine in 9mm. I looked at both the Marlin and the Ruger also. I wasn't sure how much I would use a gun of this sort, so I bought the cheap one. This carbine has really surprised me. I like it a lot, even if it's not real pretty. I've had it out for targets, plinking, rabbits, porcupines, etc and it has really done its job well. I can hit a soda can at 50 yds without trying very hard. It's got excellent sights and handles very well. In fact, I'm not sure I would trade it for either the Marlin or the Ruger. I might even buy the .40 version of this one. I think you would have a lot of uses for a carbine like this. Culling goats and home defense are ideal tasks, and it's easier and just as cheap to shoot as a pistol.

I'm not sure what your options for imported arms are there, but you might want to look at one of these as well. The only catch for you is that it has a 10 round magazine. I'd opt for the 9mm version of anything if you are doing shooting out to 100 yds - higher velocity and good penetration at longer distances than the 45 ACP is comfortable at, IMHO.

i had a marlin and still have the ruger, the ruger is 100 times better than the marlin. both of them i got in 9mm, the ruger uses the standard ruger pisol mags, so mags of 7 rds or less might be a problem in 9mm, shooting goats i think i'd opt for the 45

I used to have a Ruger PC9 in 9mm. Great gun, but sold it to a friend because I really had no use for it. My version had ghost ring sights. The accuracy at 50 yds. was very surprising. The 147 gr. loads would be a good choice for your intended purposes. The only complaint about the Ruger carbine is its lawyer proof trigger. Breaks at about 10 lbs. with excessive creep. Get the ruger and get a trigger job.
