I just put the 300 win mag in with the 300 wsm because of the close power levels.I tried to stick alike calibers together. The 300 wsm didnt do anything that the 300 win mag had not done 40 years before. It is going to be interesting to see if the short mags do survive.I know only the 270 wsm and the 300 wsm will be left but I dont know how many guns will still be chambered for them in the long run.i think had the 338 wsm com out it might have made it alot better than the 325 wsm did .It flopped because just as it came out winchester closed down production of the model 70.Ruger also dropped all the wsms.Remington jumped on the wsms because their own short mags flopped.Browning almost got left holding the ball with the short mags.I think classic calibers such as the 270 win,7 mm rem mag ,30-06,308,300 win mag 338 win mag and the 375 h&h and the 416 rem mag will sytay around till there is no more hunting left. There will be lots of good calibers that fall to the weigh side due to low popularity. The 6.5 mm and .35 calibers have not done good in America. The 35 whelen and the 358 norma and the 358 sta are awesome calibers but not very popular.I think the 338 is a cut off for may people in America thinking any thing above that is too big.I think that when you tackle the big bears no gun is too big.Thats why they deer hunt alot with 458s on kodiak Island. The 338 win mag hits right in a perfict nitch for all big game. Its not too big for deer and still big enough for Kodiak bears.I think that the 338 grew in popularity due to being able to fit in a standard action thats not too expensive. It kicks not so much that most people cant handle it.I think it has awesome bullets to use from 200 gr to 300 gr.There are a few lighter bullets also.I think that I did very well chosing the 338 win mag.Its done its job well.

I for one hope the WSM's and the WSSM's hang in there.

I think it will be interesting to see if the Hawkeye .375 Ruger cuts into .338 Win Mag sales.

I handled the new Ruger alaskan last weekend. It's a nice, compact little rifle. I am so used to shooting the big bores that the Alaskan felt really light and the barrel looked really slim. I haven't fired one yet.

I guess if I were forced to choose between the .338 winmag and the .375 Ruger, I'd choose the .338 winmag due to its popularity and resulting broad availability of ammo - a consideration with merit.

Unlike most that have posted, I look at this proposition from a different angle. I chose the .308 Winchester cause I "could" kill anything that walks in NA with it and it is a better all around cartridge. You can hunt varmints with it. Good for all medium game. and capable with right loadings for biggest NA game. I have a good friend that has killed a few cape buffalo with one. Like all jacks of all trades, it is a master of none except for maybe deer.

There is no way that if I could only have one rifle in NA would I want to do most of my shooting with a .338 WM or .375 H&H although I love these cartrides too.

My favorite: 35 whelen because of the bears. Without them 30/06 would be a good do all.

I am wondering if the 375 Ruger will be chambered in more guns than Rugers?I love Rugers.I think the model 77 has replaced the model 70 as Americas favorite.I worked in Bass pro for fun once to learn thew gun business. They pushed remington model 700 and hardly sold any winchester model 70s.They didnt order as many Rugers but sold about every one they brought in the store.I like the old ruger Model 77 best with its tang safety in the 338 win mag.I do like the stainless Ruger 77 in 338 win mag in Alaska .Its about as tough as a rifle gets.i have seen them stuck in gun carriers on 4 wheelers for months and one of the ugly ruger on the side one runover by a truck.I think the Stainless Model 77 Ruger in 338 win mag rifle can handle any of North America can dish out hunting wish. Its the # one rifle here in Alaska. It seems an over kill on deer but it is actually a very good deer cartridge.I have shot 90 whitetails without any problems and very little loss or blood shot meat. Its accurate as heck with 1" groups or less at 100 yards. Most of my 338s will shoot under 1" at 200 yards .Its pretty flat shooting with boattail bullets.I have not used the 250 gr serria 250 gr on game but have shot it a bunch at targets. The 250 gr nosler on Elk and above game is awesome.I like 200 gr or 225 on deer and lessor game.I do use my 338-378s in the wide open alot more than the 338 win mag but unless you hunt the tundra the 338 will workjust fine. The 338-378 is more expensive to load and only in one rifle but it is one of the best rifles for very long range big game hunting. It just adds to the 338 win mags range.I was intested in what people thought would be the best rifle for all North American game.

I faced grizzleys on my first Alaska hunt trying to get into my tent with me.I had my 338 win mag and I am glad I had it but no gun is too big for bears.I have 5 416 Rem mag rifles that I use as my tent guns and as a brush gun in Alaska.I use the 410 gr woodliegh bullets.I like the 416 rem mag and 338 win mag combo for any big game which roams the earth including elephant, kodiak bears, cape buffalo and anything else that bites.A 50 bmg is not to big when your just feet from a roaring grizzley.Grizzleys will out run you ,out swim you and up here the trees usually arebig enough to climb up to get away from them.I would not trust a 30-06 on anything that bites.I think the 338 win mag should be the min by law in Alaska for big game because of bears.Yes you can kill a grizzley with a 220 gr bullet from a 30-06 but seeing how many rounds it takes andhow many bites you can take after they are dead will be no fun.I really respect the bears up here.Once you fool with them a while you will too.The 338 win mag is about as small of a round I want to fool with for grizzlies. Its good for everything else also.I keep my 416s as a life insurance policy.

Nah you are all wrong...325 WSM

The 300 win mag is just a little too lite for big bears and the the 338 Win Mag is just a little too much for every day.

325 WSM in a 7 3/4 lb rifle with a leuplod 2.5x8...

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

If ypou want to hunt grizzleys with the 308 you go right head.I have seen too many people not realize what a grizzleys can do.I watched these critters flip dumpsters just to get goodies inside.I have alsdo seen them tear doors off of small cars just to get a sandwich inside.I think the 338 win mag as good as it is small when hunting grizzleys or kodiaks. The 325 is better than the 300 wsm but its doomed. The 8mm has never had any luck in america and without Winchester the wsms will fade away.I think the 338 wsm might have done alright.I like the 338 win mag its my favorite .It is chambered in alot of guns, its accurate and has a wide range of ammo and is easy to reload.I have outshot some $5,000 custom hunting rifles with my standard Ruger 77 stainless in 338 win mag.It outshot my Winchester stainless with a boss 338 win mag.I do need to try some of the newer bullets with the 338 win mag.I think its hard to beat the 250 gr nosler partitionin .338 for things that bite or weigh over 1000 pounds.

I'd have to pick either a 9.3x62 or a 358 win. Most thump for the powder spent and my rifles in these calibers are fun to shoot. Kill any beast with in reason.

This thread says choice for all north american game and people are still suggesting 7mm, 308 etc. All north America does include Brown Bears, and Polar Bears etc.

To me, the great bears are the only variable in answering this question. bewildered

If I hunted the great bears once in my lifetime and was limited to one rifle for all my other hunting as well, I would choose the .30-06. If I were going to hunt the great bears on a regular basis and was limited to one rifle for all my other hunting as well, then I would pick the .338 Win Mag.

It's funny becuase I don't own a rifle chambered for either of these cartridges. If I were going brown bear hunting tomorrow, I'd take my .375 H&H.

I'm so glad I don't have to pick just one! dancing
