OK. I've finaly decided on a GPS unit, the Garmin e-Trax Legend. Looks like I can get it and the National Geographic Back Roads Explorer software for $230. Anybody use the NG software?

mark,
I've got the National Geographic TOPO software, don't know if that's the same as yours.

I like it, even though my GPS is way old and doesn't link up with the software. My dad has NG TOPO and an eTrex (I think) and he links them up. Very cool, he leaves his GPS on whenever he's hiking (doesn't hunt), comes home, links up and all of his hikes are preserved (miles traveled, altitude changes, etc.)

Nice system

My Rino 120 (Garmin) will only allow me to upload MapSource (Garmin) files.

I have the NG Topo for Oregon. I can interface to the NG SW and upload/download waypoints, routes, do realtime tracking (while connected to the computer), etc. But not upload the NG maps to the unit.

Most GPS's use their own proprietary formats for mapping.

I also have a legend. You can only use Garmine maps "inside" the GPSr. I have Mapsource TOPO in my GPSr. I also have N.G. TOPO. This is a great addition to my hunting stuff. The legend and the NG can be linked to manage waypopints , routes, and tracks. It can also real time track you if you have a laptop.
Once you start to do much you will want the mapsource maps for the GPSr. They are GREAT! Ron

I have the Mapsource Topo and U.S Roads and Recreation. Depending on where you will be using your unit, the R&R may be a better value. Not too much to worry about Topo-wise here in corn country!!!

Nebraska, I also have RR and TOPO. The difference I notice in them is the points of interest. The topo will give you springs mountain peaks stuff like that. RR does not have as much for points of interest. I do like RR for the improved streets. Ron
