No luck here on either the elk hunt, 380 also, or for a goat. Oh well, I knew that wouldn't have time for a sheep hunt this year so I didn't put in for a tag. I guess I'll just have to go to my usual elk spot and hope for a bull. Antelope will be easier since I put in for the 700's.

No Breaks bull tag this year (or any year) but I did draw an A9 extra cow tag that's good through Jan 1! Might be able to pack her out on the snowcat. Other than that, you should see my list of "not successfuls"...hard to take some years. Jay Kolbe

Snowcat: I have a close friend that has gotten THREE (3!) of those covetted Elk tags of which you speak. I was looking over his shoulder through my binos when he took his last 7x7 Bull there! Man I would pay a lot of money for one of those tags. I also failed to draw any special tags as yet for Mule Deer, Elk, Moose, Sheep or Mt. Goats! I am getting lots of bonus points though - but so is everyone else! Bonus points soup - I guess is what I will be dining on this fall! Well maybe I will get an Antelope tag? Oh well - there is always next year (if these damn earthquakes don't quit - 35 aftershocks so far - maybe there won't be a next year?). More later Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

VG- Heard you guys were getting shook up pretty good down there. I "applied" for antelope in the 700s, pretty good odds. I used to hunt 321 out of Alder but only drew every 2nd or 3rd year. I love it on the Robb-Ledford. What did the quake do to town? I've heard that there was significant damage. Jay Kolbe

Unfortunately I did not draw, as I did not put in for this season-was planning on going to Spain for school, and didn't work out. One of the dumbest things I've ever done, to NOT put in, just in case. Anyways, my 15 yr old brother, who shot an 8x9 bull this year in Gardner during a late season youth hunt, just drew an either sex tag for an area 10 miles from our house (1 in 10 tags I believe), where I shot a big 6 point bull 2003 season on an either sex special tag. My dad hasn't drawn in 24 years, and my 15yr old brother gets 2 either sex special permits within 3 years. How does that work?!?!?! Happy for him anyways though! Snowcat: Yes it has been a bouncy several days down here! I quit counting at 35 aftershocks! Some as high as 4.5 on the Richter Scale! I am guessing there have been at least 50 aftershocks now. You can't feel them when in a car. I am way behind in sleep due to the earthquakes - I do know that! I shot a lot of Coyotes and Jack Rabbits up Robb-Leford way this past year. Also went on a successful Mt. Goat Hunt last season and saw a buster of a Black Bear up there last August when we were scouting! That is beautiful country for Elk. I am not to big on Elk Hunting - I usually only get into that after all my other tags are filled. I did get a real dandy 6x6 Bull Elk last year further south than Ledford. I used to look forward to the ride from the rare arthquakes out Seattle way - and have been in 4 or 5 dandies out there on the coast - over 50 years! But I have never seen aftershocks anywhere near what these are doing! Nor anywhere near the number of aftershocks! Lots of petty damage here at my house. One TV took a death dive and two paintings and two photgraphs bit it. Along with 7 vases down and I had a large sign my brother had made for me fall on my three Rifle scales (for weighing 25 pounds, 10 pounds and 1 pound respectively they all are dead and I lost a Mt. Goat skull and an Antelope skull! Dyammm! I am still amazed my house is in one piece. Absolutely amazed! I will be glad when we get back to steady earth! It is absolutely amazing how many Antelope are in SW Montana this year! I have never seen so many. I am hopeful the 700 districts are the same. Spent a lot of good years and good times Hunting around Alder. The new Montana state record Antelope was killed last year not 4 miles from my house here in Dillon! When I found that out I said to myself "what in the heck are you doing driving 500 miles over east to Hunt Antelope for"?!!! I saw this new record at the Sportsmans Show in Bozeman last January and nearly cried when I found out where it was taken! That Seeley Lake country sure has a lot of W.T.'s in it! Be careful when you drive around! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

I drew a cow tag in 410. I'm happy about that. Fingers are crossed on antelope buck. Maybe someday I'll get lucky and get a big bull. Steve H

My friend, George, the unluckiest hunter I know drew an either sex elk tag for this year. He was over the moon, until he realised that the dates on his tag do not match the dates we will be in Montana. I know that it is highly unlikely, but is there any chance that Montana's DFW would let him change the date on the tag? Thanks, Paul. Never use a cat's arse to hold a tea-towel.

I think George's record will remain unbroken as far as bad luck is concerned. MT FW&P regs. are very inflexible in this area.

A big zero for me too. One of these years I will draw a bull tag.... Maybe next year...

I didn't draw anything this year. I can't really complain though. I got an either sex 380 tag 2 years ago.

I have hunted that area and it is pretty good hunting. There are allot of elk in the area but there is also allot of country too. Are you hunting on your own or with an outfitter? By the way there are 3 less bulls to hunt in the area... A couple of weeks ago a van hit 3 bulls on the highway and killed all three. I have pics but they are a little too gruesome for the internet. Do you have a specific location in the area you are going to hunt?

Just got a call from my best friend-both his fiance and his mom got either sex tags for the area south of my brother's either sex tag!!!! He hasn't even drawn an antelope tag for 3 years! Mark Dobrenski: The new record Antelope scored 93 7/8ths as I recall and was kilt near the intersection of I-15 and Highway 278! I saw the Antelopes horns and they were really special! Nice and thick and nice prongs. I forget the guys name that was the Hunter but Kelly's Taxidermy in Dillon is doing the head as I understand. They would know all about it if you are interested in asking them. I just got drawn for my usual area and I have 500 miles (each way) to go to scout and then another trip of 1,000 miles (minimum) for the Hunt! Sheesh! Diesel is becoming spendy! Thanks-I'll call Kelly, I've known him and his wife for a while. If that score is the real deal that is one huge goat!!! Must of been big time private land situation, or incredibly lucky! Or both...grins The old record of 92 and 6 took a good beating on this one! Thx for the info MD
