Well, I change my idea about the "Ideal/Practical Battery" every month or so... currently I like: 22lr/243/30-06/375H&H. I noticed "Capt.Jack" picked the same... apparently a bright guy (grin).

No offense,
but one shouldn't limit himself to such a small number of guns in the first place.
Buy many many many guns.
The amount you have spent on guns should be more than you have spent on a vehicle.
Yeah, and we make fun of the women folk spending money on coats and shoes...
At least every time they walk by a store they don't drop a grand.

I've got two lists
First list is made up of guns which I have purchased myself

Remington 541 T bolt 22LR
remington 700 bolt 7mm-08
winchester m70 bolt 30-06
winchester m70 bolt 375 H&H
krieghoff classic bouble 375 H&H
All wear scopes
I know there is overlap between the 7mm08 and the 30-06, but the 30-06 is a lucky gun so I'll rationalize and say that I'll use the 08 for long range and the 06 for normal range ( 200yds or less). As far as the two 375's, the bolt is the gun I used to take my first big game trophy( a cape buffalo - another story) so I can't give it up and who wouldn't keep a double?

Second list
guns I inhereted from my brother

ruger 77/22 bolt 22LR
Styer-Mannlichester bolt 30-06
Charles Lancaster dbl 303
Westley Richards bolt 375H&H
Heym bolt 416 rigby
J. Rigby dbl 470 NE

With the exception of the ruger and the Styer I won't shoot these, I'll never sell them either.

Matt77, would that be the amount spent on one gun or on all your guns? I need to know if I'm behind or ahead of the curve. - Dan

For North American hunting, my personal choices would be:

.22LR bolt rifle
.280 Remington bolt rifle
.338 Winchester Magnum bolt rifle
12ga. autoloader

Looks real good from here...I would pick 221 Fireball over a 17 caliber mainly due to how much fun a 221 Fireball is and how unfun it is to clean a 17 caliber firearm.

cengel,

This hunting battery works for me.

.22lr in a Browning BPR. Just as accurate as a bolt gun at rimfire ranges.
1. 223 AI varmints
2. 25-06 Rem light mammals
3. 338-06 AI heavy mammals
4. 416 Rem mag dangerous

If you really like to shoot your guns as I do, then you gotta handload those centerfires. A lot less expensive than those rimfire magnums. And you can lessen recoil by choosing lighter and slower loads.

Do you guys really think theres too much overlap in the 7mm and 25-06? Maybe drop to a .243 if that's the case?
Yep, change 25-06 to .243, and you've got an excellent rifle battery. You might need to add a .223
