Is the 7RM enough gun for elk past 200 yds?

If you do you're part and put the bullet in the right spot the 7mm RM is plenty of rifle for elk as long as you use a premier bullet. I have taken plenty of elk with this cartridge. I believe the 7 mag is a better caliber at longer distance than it is up close (under 100 yards).

If you are referring to a 7mm Remington Mag, the answer is yes. The key to putting down an elk is shot placement. Even much larger calibers are ineffective if the shot is not placed through the vitals.

YUP. Use a reasonable bullet weight and type (read as 160 gr and up hunting, not paper shooting), and practice until your confidence level in the accuracy of the gun is sufficient to make the shot.

I've seen a bunch of elk killed by the 270 Win. with 150 Noslers!! Your 7 mm Rem will be just fine, subject to bullet selection/placement!!

My personal choice and favorite is the 375 H&H

I have taken a couple elk in the last few years with my 7 RM using 160 and 175 gr bullets. Use a high quality bullet and don't expect the elk to drop at the shot. My best bull took 3 shots with 160 gr Accubonds. The first two thru the lungs and the last in the heart. He never once indicated he was hit.

Absolutely.

Contact Mike Eastman at the Eastman's Journal and ask him about the 7mag/160 Partition combo on elk. He has a few decades of experience with this.

The guys who have a show on Versus, called The Best of the West are dumping elk at well beyond 200 yards with 7mags and 168 Berger VLDs. It does not matter whether you agree or disagree with LRH/S, the fact is the combo works with proper bullet hits.

My first hunting experience was only a hand full of years ago and I watched my hunting partner put a 180 grain NP via a 300 Win right through the lungs and heart. She just turned and looked in our direction and walked off. No signs of being hit although she didn't walk far. It was just that initial reaction that still shows in my memories. Hopefully we'll see what reaction we get from my 338-378 Wby this year .

Plenty of elk have been killed with the 270 Win so you know your 7 Rem will be just fine. As stated, use a heavier premium bullet and put it where it counts. Not going to kill anything by shooting it in the antlers.

The 7mm Rem mag with the 160gr Nosler Partition is some of the best elk medicine ever created. The variable will be conditions and the shooters skill. Just voicing my opinion but any shot on and animal as big as an elk past 500 yds is just poor judgement.

I've seen dramatic on the spot back flips with a 7rm and 160gr Sierras. About 40-45 times.

More times than not the elk I seen run off or act like they were not hit, where shot with heavy bullets and big calibers. 300mags and 338 cals are natorious for that, they ether flaten em on the spot, or they run off for a ways, usually sporting 2 holes and bleeding profusely however.

IMO the 7 mag.is an excellent choice with 175 gr. bullets at 2900 to 3000 FPS for up to a maximum of 400 yards, and only then under ideal conditions. Beyond 400 elk should not be shot at, its time to put a sneak on them, its called hunting....

325 yards, 7rm, 160 NAB, MV 3080. First shot through the lungs with a 1.25 exit, he hunched and froze. Second into the shoulder taking out the bottom of the spine and lodged in the off shoulder w/ a nice mushroom. Needless to say he dropped on the second shot. Didn't have scales to weigh him, but he was 32" from the bottom of his chest to the top of his back.



I'd use it again.

I've been on hunts where bulls were taken with 270 Win and 280, so I'd have to say the 7RM should do a fine job for you. Out of all the Magnum rifles I've owned the 7RM is my favorite for NA big game.

I've never shot any elk beyond 200 yards. But the ones I've shot with a 7RM and 160gr NP's were very dead and I didn't have to chase none of them.
I agree with Ray.

I have taken two elk with a 7mm Rem mag, both at over two hundred yards, both with a Nosler 160 gr.Partition. Neither of these bulls went anywhere.

I went to Federals website to compare some numbers between the 7mm RM and the 300 Win Mag. Real interesting to say the least.

At long ranges, this is where ballistic coefficients come into play. 7mm bullets, weight for weight, are more aerodynamic, so they'll fly long and flat, usually with less "oomph" behind them. Any heavy for caliber bullet can achieve this, but above 30 cal and you need quite a bit of powder (300wby, RUM, 30-3078 so on and so forth with 200gr and up bullets)

Plus heavy for caliber bullets have high sectional density, so they can still do the job when they get there. One of the reasons 6.5 and 7mm's kill beyond what you'd assume.

To answer the original topic, yes! Heck a lot lighter calibers will kill elk to 200 yards. 2 of my hunting partners use 7 Rems with no problems, longest kill so far was around 375yds with 150gr CoreLokt

last year in idaho my buddy took a large bull @ a ranged 500 yds 160 partition 7mm one shot right dead center of the heart, took my rag horn 5x5 @ a ranged 427 yds, mine didnt die quite as fast but it's still a good combo, my bullet mushroomed perfectly i have not weighed it yet to check on loss,

also forgot to say i dont really get off on shooting animals at those distances, give me my 75 yd. whitetail shot anyday of the week.

I've only shot two, not a very big sample, but we ate them both. The 140-grain Nosler Partition bullet can be loaded with a point-blank range of 325 yards with a three-inch rise and fall, something worth considering.

Thanks. Yep, he couldn't have fell in a better place. The rest of the herd went down into the gulch in the background after the second shot. We were able to get a truck right up to him and load him in the bed. Made breakfast in town by 9am

It would be nice if they all died near a trail...
