Northwestern Colorado hunter gored by injured deer

By MELINDA MAWDSLEY
The Daily Sentinel

Monday, November 05, 2007

A northwestern Colorado man was injured Sunday after a deer gored him while he was hunting about 15 miles south of Craig, according to the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Randy Hampton, spokesman with the DOW’s northwest region, said the man was hunting with at least one other person in the Hamilton area.

Hampton did not release the victim’s name.

The incident was not reported to authorities, and the injured hunter was taken to Memorial Hospital in Craig by someone in his hunting party.

“We have been told the Craig hospital transferred the patient to St. Mary’s (Hospital),†Hampton said. “My understanding is the injuries are significant.â€

Hampton was unsure if the hunters were on public or private land in Hamilton, but he said the incident appeared to be an accident.

“He or his hunting partner shot a buck deer, downed it and went to the buck,†Hampton said. “The animal stood up and gored him.â€

Anyone who has ever tried to stand on a wounded deer's antler and cut his throat, has usually found this out the hard way!

Don't think I want to try taking on a buck with the equivalent of 10 knives at one time.

This person is a very good friend of mine. He is a licensed CO outfitter that works on private land in CO. The last I heard today he was still in ICU. Tom is a seasoned pro but this just proves anything came happen at any time. To steal a line from Hill St Blues, lets be carefull out there.
My prayers are with him.

That's horrible, hopefully he'll come out of it all with a fast recoup.
