A neighbor wants to sell me his Rem 870 combo that he purchased from a friend of his roughly around 1992. It is the combo set that has the smooth and rifled barrel.

He said he'd sell it for 225.00 to me. I've never priced the 870 combo and I hear they are pretty cheap new.

As far as I know the gun has been used only for one doe about 7 years ago by the current seller. We used to hunt together but he stopped that year.

Is this a reasonable price if the gun/bbls are in decent shape?

Grab it quick....it's a real bargain if you want such a weapon!

That price is OK for the gun itself even without the second barrel.

VERY good price. I bought my 870 around 1988 with just the shot barrel and it was just under $200 then. I bought a slug barrel in '98 for about $125. A new combo now would be at least $350.

Doc,

Providing it is in good shape and workable order, that's a real bargain. Grab it.

Around here $225 is a good price the rifle barrel.

But a lot depends on the guns condiction.

If it is an 870 Express it might not be a good price.

In 1990 I bought a 870 Express Turkey gun for my self for $210 and a 870 Express Youth gun for youngest son for $225. Both of my guns same a home town dealer

The same year a hunting buddy bought two 870 Expresses for his boys at Wal-Mart for $200 each.

That year at Thanksgiving my buddy and I took the boys hunting four days. It rained every day. My buddy boys had a time keeping the rust off their guns. My boy did not.

I don't if it was the finish on their Wal-Mart gun or the oil they were using. All I know is that I never had a rust problem.

I asked him what the rock bottom price is. He sent me a text: "$150 cash"

That is for a slug barrel and a regular smooth barrel. 12 g, 870 Express Magnum.

I replied with "sold"

I am a little disappointed bc I thought one of the barrels was rifled but it is not.

How much will a rifled barrel run me?

How far are you planning on shooting the slugs? Will you be adding a scope?

Reason for asking - I have the slug barrel that goes with the Remington gas op 11-87. It's not rifled. Smooth bore. It's short and has the rifle type ramp front sight and fully adjustable rear sight. It's very accurate out to about 50 yds. It's probably good for farther, but that's as much as I can do with open sights and poor eyesight.

In other words, could you already have everything you need?

yes I'll have every thing I need. I'd shoot maybe to 75 yards with a slug barrel but double that with a rifled barrel and good ammo.

For $150 I think I did really well.

Hey Doc, If it has Screw-In Choke Tubes, Remington offers a "Cation" Choke Tube with Rifling which works pretty good. Not like a fully Rifled Tube though.

You ripped your neighbor's head off on the price.

Back in the early 60s a buddy of mine got an 870 from our local Western Auto Store new for $66. Full Choke in a non-vented barrel with the RK-W Wood Finish(very glossy). We were on bicycles(with fenders back then to keep the water and mud off of us) when he finally "Paid it off". We had to tie it to his back to get it home.

He still uses it today. tu2

Get the rifled slug barrel. I don't know what sort of terrain you hunt in, but if your deer hunting is in farm country, as mine is, few of your shots will be more than 50 yds, but you will occasionally get a good steady shot at 150. For those occasions your rifled slug barrel will work well. Put a 3x scope on it and shoot saboted slugs (I like Federal's with Barnes slugs) and your slug gun will shoot just as well as a really good black-powder rifle. I've killed deer at fairly long range with mine.

some of the areas I hunt have cut bean and corn so I can shoot long ways, where I'd prefer a ML for those 200 yard shots. On the other hand, I do have a couple of places near a creek where a long shot is 60 yards.

How much are both the slug barrel and smooth bore bbl with turkey choke in it worth now?

I'm getting rid of both bbls to get a rifled barrel. I don't need them and will never use them.

I think you'd do better to keep them all, and sell as a gun w/ extra barrel sets when that time eventually comes around.

Others might say part them out. But, I've found it difficult to get much for a barrel by itself.

that crossed my mind the moment I posted before. Maybe I should hold on to them.

Doc,

GREAT snag!! tu2
I've never seen one go for $150, let alone with a second barrel. And, an 870 holds its value as well as any shotgun.
Have fun with it!!!

Don
