Just wondered one has some experience with any outfitters for a coues deer? I have normally got some good leads from the guys at AR. Just now starting to think about next year.

Absolutely! Call my buddy Ralph Anderson down in Tucson, AZ. If you don't get a nice buck it's because YOU missed! Best guide on earth.

Coues deer are on my short list as well. One of our Posse members just took a book coues in Sonora a couple of weeks ago. It is the nicest one I have personally seen. He and his wife were hunting with Ubaldo Lopez. They were also filming for Ubaldo's hunting TV show in Mexico, Ubaldo Lopez Outdoors, and for Brian's show here in the States, Brian Doty's Xtreme Outdoor Adventures TV.

Good luck on booking your hunt. I will look forward to a hunt report down the road.

Bob

Here is Brian's couse.

Kirk Kelso of Pusch Ridge Outfitters does an outstanding job. I've hunted with him twice and been fully satisfied. If you do a search, you can find a couple of hunt reports I've posted on this site.

I guess I would look at Az or Mexico, but I'm assuming hunting in Mex. will be considerably more expensive. Tony- you are the one who recommended my last budget hunt- for black bear with Roy Pattison I believe. If that was you-thanks had a good hunt a couple of years ago and came home with a nice 7-footer.

Tony,

I never put that together. I am building points to archery elk hunt with Duwane. Just got my paperwork the other day. I am thinking 2009 I may actually try to draw if I am not in AK brown bear hunting. 2010 for sure...

jstevens,

Yup, that be me on the bear hunt with Roy P. He has some big bears in his area, doesn't he? I've killed three monsters with Roy, and one from many years ago went better than 8'! In fact, I have a photo of Michael Bond -- aka RM007 here on AR -- and Roy measuring the green hide.

Hunting Coues in Mexico will likely cost upwards to $2,000 more than it does in the states. The basic hunt itself is normally at least $1,000 more and then there's the additional cost of gun permits. Plus, airfare into Hermosillo bumps it up a bit more since you can normally get really good fares into Tucson with advance purchase.

That said, the odds for filling a tag with an above-average buck from south of the border are also better. And of course, there's no problem drawing a permit as there could be in AZ.

The photo on the back cover of the book shows Duwane and I with a buck I killed in Mexico in 2000. It had a 16.5" spread, but 5" of one main beam was broken off. Since I travel in Mexico by vehicle quite a bit, I drove down from Phx (about 5-6 hrs.) and used someone else's rifle.

For both you and Tim,

I've known Duwane since the mid-1980s and can say without reservation that he is a straight-shooter. He and his guides work extremely hard for their clients to have a successful and enjoyable hunt. I have yet to talk to one client who wasn't satisfied after a hunt with Duwane.

Tim,

I'm guessing Duwane has you applying for the archery permit in unit 1, which is super for both the quantity and quality of bulls.

I've done at least a dozen articles on archery and rifle bulls killed in that unit by Duwane's clients. So if and when you draw, you will have an excellent chance to kill a wall-hanger. Getting the permit is the toughest part, but for archery, it's a bit easier. Good luck.

Bob,

That's a dandy buck your friend killed!-TONY

Actually,

I have never even applied. Just bought points for years, but when we decide to do it, it will be Unit 1 archery. How many points do you think it takes to have a decent chance to draw? My delimna is that I have to feel fairly confident that I will draw when I apply, because I have to schedule at least 2 hunts a month in fall. Obviously this one would be the priority, but I want to schedule it when I think I can draw so I won't be hanging with a week and no where to go.

I think after 2008, I will have 5 points (maybe 6).

Tim,

Here's a bit of info on how the draw works.

For 2008, there are 150 archery permits in unit 1. NON-RESIDENTS are limited to 10% or 15 permits.

In addition, 20% or 30 permits are set aside for those applicants who have the MOST bonus points, and normally the majority of those that do are NRs.

So if you do the math, it's often the case where all of the 15 permits available to NRs are spoken for when the drawing in the max point pool takes place, i.e 15 of the 30 available there. That means NO permits in the subsequent draw for the other 120 permits can go to a NR.

That said, on occasion, a NR permit or two will go unclaimed in the 20% pool and revert into the general draw. When that happens, any NR, regardless of the number of bonus points, can conceivably draw a permit. I know it has happened, too, because I've written a couple articles on guys who drew with few points.

So the long and short of it is you'll never be able to predict anything until you get enough points to put you into the max pool. But even then, you'll be in it with many other NRs who also have lots of points. Five or six are not a lot, and although I'm guessing, it could take as many as 10-12 to get into the max pool for an archery hunt. It's even more for a gun hunt.

Now, I believe the game department sells a breakdown of how many hunters have the most points per species and maybe even by the hunts they applied for in the past. But I'm not sure.

Confused yet?? Wink-TONY

Thanks for the info, I'll call Duwayne, Az. is probably more in my budget. The next really expensive hunt needs to be back to Africa again. I like to do one a year to somewhere besides Mo. whitetails, this year hunted caribou in Alaska with a buddy who lives there. How tough a draw is Az for coues deer? I am usually pretty lucky as far as drawing tags.

jstevens,

There are three seasons, which generally run in Oct., Nov. and Dec., in most of AZ's popular hunt units. The later the season, the more difficult to draw.

The Dec. season has the fewest permits, highest success rates and is the hardest to draw. But as a rule, if you apply for that season as first choice and a less popular season as second choice, your odds of drawing a permit are quite good.

When you talk to Duwane, he'll give you the scoop on it all and likely suggest that you let him apply for the permits for you. -TONY
