Sierra Gameking bullets

Everyone likes to put down Sierra gameking bullets. I like them and they are pretty much the only bullet I reload and I have yet to have one fail me. I have had complete penetration of the body from side to side whether it was a wild boar or deer at 200 yards and at whatever angle. I'm not saying that one would never fail, but so far none have. I use 150 and 165 grain bullets in .308 Win and .30-'06.

I use them for deer in several rifles and havn't had the bad experiences either. I do plan on using Deep Skoks when they are available. I don't believe that "premiums are a must" in every situation but do like them for bigger animals and/or higher velocity. I think matching the bullet to the cartridge is key.

Robert,
With all due respect, haven't we been down this road before????
If you like them that's great, it's still a free country.
In my guiding busniness we take about 200 animals per year and have for the last 14 years. I guarantee you will have one fail, maybe many fail.
Have I used Game Kings?
Yes, many, many boxes in several different calibers.
Will they work MOST of the time?
Yes, especially on light skinned game and broadside chest shots.
Are premium bullets the cheapest part of the hunting equation?
Yes.
Will you know when you've lost an animal because one failed?
Probably not.

A few years ago I guided a couple quality control guys from the Sierra factory. They got all the bullets they wanted for free and completely believed in Sierra bullets for varmints and benchrest competition. They didn't make a lot of money, but they did what they love (I can sympathize). When they went hunting they opened their wallets and bought Nosler Partitions.

Robert:

I agree with you that Sierras are generally pretty effective hunting bullets. More game is lost to poor expansion than to lack of penetration, and Sierras generally provide good expansion.

I have found, though, that in general the flat base bullets hold their cores a little better than the boattails. This seems to be because the taper of the jacket in the boattail section is necessarily tapering the wrong way to get the best grip on the core. All things being equal, I would expect a bit better terminal performance from the flat base Sierras compared to the boattail Sierras.

Have you ever had a chance to make any comparison?

While I do not use them for Hunting Elk, GK's are perfectly suited for deer sized game. I actually like the fact that they open quickly. They do so all the time whether I hit bone or not. They have shown to be accurate in the rifles I use and effective on the game I have taken. The large wound channel results and that is ultimately what we need. I'm not sure what these guys mean by bullet failure, if the animal dies, you fine the core and jacket separately, the wound is large, and the critter is dead, is this a bullet failure? I think not. I will continue to shoot GK's at deer and Partitions at Elk, But I would not hesitate to switch up if I had to.

Although I have loaded flatbased bullets, I have never shot any game with them. I see no good reason they wouldn't do very well.

I do not like the matchking on game of any size of consequence. I know and have witnessed its use on game and with the perfect shot they work. Most of the time you don't get the perfect shot

Im an Italian inexperienced hunter, so, please, be indulgent. I have something to say about Sierra Gameking bullets: few months ago, I had the opportunity to shoot a Moufflon ram (it looks like American Stone sheep, but weighs 100-140 lbs. max.) I shot it with my Ruger M77 .300 Win Mag, a quite hot load of Norma MRP and a 165 g. Gameking. The ram was walking away at 250 yds, and I shot it slightly downhill. The bullet hit it at the upper and rear part of the back, in the kidneys area, with a good angle to reach the heart or lungs. Despite of that serious wound, the ram first felt, than could painfully run away and we had to track it for 5 hours, with little blooding; a friend had to shoot it again, after more than 1 Km. Then, I could see that the Gameking had completely break-up, and tore away a piece of meat like a chicken egg from the back, just on the side of the spine, with a penetration of only 6-7 cm. Some fragments of spine and bullet damaged stomach and bowels, but nothing more. The ram could have survived several days with that wound. I know that I have been unlucky to hit the spine, but I bet that a tougher bullet could have done a MUCH better job, by reaching the chest area. It has been an unpleasant experience. It was the first Gameking that I used at hunt and certainly the last one

Best regards

If I never used a brand of bullet again because one of them failed, it would be hard to find a brand to use. I also try not to push the bullet beyond it's design.

I have responded to a topic like this one not to long ago. I will say again, that I have killed a shit load of game with Sierra GK's using my 7mm Rem.Mag. with no failures. Even though I used Nosler Partitions as well with great success, I did not feel there was a need for anything more than Sierra GK's for med. size game. But, recently I have had Sierra GK's from the same lot blow up on game using my 7mmSTW. From that experience I will have to refrain from using GK's in my 7mmSTW. I would not hestitate to use GK's on game as long as the velosity does not exceed much more than 3,000 fps.

WOW only 10 posts so far-- I didn't want to be on page 50, so I didn't even post on the last one.
Here is my TAKE on the "issue" if it works for you fine, if it doesn't thats fine too, to each his own. I don't use matchkings for big game, and I use very few "premium" hunting bullets, they are too darn $ and I like too practice a bunch before the hunt, and I practice with what I am going to use, so put that in your barrels and smoke it.
FREEDOM of choice makes it all the more fun!
