I am interested in a .44magmun carbine for thick brush and drive hunting. Can anyone give me info on the newer version called the "deerfield" 99/44 as compared to the older "deerstalker" 10/44 model? Personally I prefer the older model, but I have never used the newer one personally.

Expres I have both and prefer the older model, the newer one uses the magazine that looks like the 10-22 version, and mine will not feed some rounds, the newer one is realy set up to mount a scope on it, the rear iron sucks. THe older one just seems to me to be better built and handles better, just my two cents

...Thought so, I would like to get one that is in good condition, mount a good peep at the rear and do some work finding a load it likes. I would REALLY love to be able to rebarrel one to .454Casul, but no one has ever been able to comment on this idea, so I guess it is not viable. What's your feeling with the .44RemMag in a rifle barrel for use on game? I'm thinking 100m max for deer sized stuff, and maybe half that for larger pigs?

Last fall, after years of searching, I found a Ruger M44 Carbine (Sporter model w/ finger groove/monte carlo stock) in 90%+ condition and I bought it on the spot. I have handled the new and the old and I feel that there is no comparison - the older guns are superior in every aspect. According to the records at Ruger my gun was manufactured in March of 1971, and the gun is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. The gun had a very old Weaver 4X scope with the "see-through" rings. I replaced the scope with a Leupold 1-4x VXII but kept the rings. The dealer who sold me the scope and mounted it raved about these guns. Personally, I think that the M44 was one of the best brush guns ever made and I know that I will never part with mine. I plan to use it on whitetails here in Michigan when hunting thick cover. Forget the new 99/44 and find an older one, you will be very glad that you did.

Express, I never pushed mine to 100 meters/yards kept most shots down to around the 75meter/yard mark. The action I think is not strong enough for any other round that would be larger, although I remember reading that some gunmaker did convert one to 50 action express. I try peep sights on it for awhile and killed several deer with it, when I had to go to bi-focals I mount one of the 2x power shotgun scopes on it and never looked back.

Hows this for lucky?: I got onto the computer yellow pagers and made up a list of EVERY major gunshop in the country, then EVERY one in my province(Tuscany). I was determined to find a one of these little carbines. First off I called a shop that's nearby though I'd never been to see it. And hey! They have one! 2 hours later the gun was in my hands. The sights have been manipulated, filed and possibily zeroed to factory ammo. I will mount a peep as soon as I get my hands on one. Mission accomplished.

Congrads on the aquisition. Williams Gun Sight makes a peep site for these carbines. You might have to change the front post if you change to a peep, according the the gun smiths at Williams.
