Son, friend and I put in for this Fall's elk hunt in Wyoming. (Oct 9 thru 19) Were a little surprised to get drawn due to our limited number of points.
We will be hunting with Robert's crew at the Triangle X Ranch. We understand we may be hunting the Yellowstone herd which migrates from the park, with some potential for very large bulls.
This is a follow-on hunt for my son and I. We had a Father-Son hunt back in 1987 in Colorado, where we each scored.
Am not sure if we should get tags for other game. Any advice related to that will be much appreciated.

Good luck, but that is pretty early in the Fall to expect elk, especially the big bulls, to be migrating out of the Park.

TopGun,
I got the herd bull when I hunted Colorado, and my son got a nice 5X5. We are not trophy oriented, although it would be a blessing if one wandered in front of our sights. We will be happy to bring home any elk that our guide says is appropriate to take.
My dad was a butcher, and we had all the meat we could ever desire when growing up. He taught us kids that it's more about the experience than the meat.
Additionally, our outfitter says that if we hunt hard in their area (Not far from Moos) between the 3 of us, we should have several good possibilities to get our sights on a descent elk or two or three.
The excitement is already building.
Son and I will be taking 375s, mine being a pre-war Winchester Model 70 H&H, but I also am thinking that my backup rifle will be a scoped 348 that I scoped using my own unique design.

Good luck on your hunt with the Turners. They are top notch outfitters and people. Have you tried to fit your Mod 71 into a scabbard? Also, that country is pretty open and shots can be on the long side too. May consider taking a little flatter shooting backup gun. Daryl.

I didn't know about the terrain.
The other alternative would be our pre-64 Winchester 30-06s with 165 grain Barnes monolithics at around 2650 fps.

Bob, Can never go wrong with the 30/06. The elk will definitely not like your 375 h&h either. Both calibers will do the job well. Also, there usually is a backup rifle in camp ready to go. As for hunting other game species, I would defer to the Turners expertise. They know better than anyone how the deer herd is doing. But The one time you do see a trophy deer is when you don't have a tag. Good hunting, Daryl.

Be safe, as there are lots of Grizzlies in that area.

Topgun is correct, little early for the elk to come out of the Park however, two years ago we got early snow 18"+ and they were on the move!

Best of Luck

You never know what will happen with the weather out there. Two years ago that storm hit and killed thousands of cows over in the Black Hills. The hunting seasons were pretty much over before they started because there was no way to get around after you got off the main roads. It was almost the same way up in the BigHorns where it was almost impossible to get around without a snowmobile. Last year we got over a foot at 8000' up in the BigHorns the middle of September during the archery elk season, so you just never know from one day to the next what will happen and you need to be prepared for anything!
