Got back from my mule deer hunt yesterday.

I saw 3 bucks while scouting and shot mine 1 hour into the season.

I was using my brand new M70 Win in .270 Win.

Now I have killed deer and elk with a 270 before, but I always used 150gr bullets.

This time I loaded up with Hornady 130 gr Interlocks.

I drew down on the buck at about 75 yards. He saw the movement and spun around just as I was about to settle down and squeeze.

He started to move out and I followed him with the scope and squeezed off just as the sight aligned with the forward half of his shoulder.

He went down like a sack of potatoes. Tried to get back up, but couldn’t. Both legs went straight up in the air.

No need for a second shot.

Both shoulders were mangled along with a large section of lung tissue.

The buck didn’t travel more than 2 yards after the shot.

I hope JOC was watching.

Congratulations on your Mule Deer buck and a great shot!

I use a 25-06 & 280 Rem. on deer. That 270 is right in the middle of my two rifles.

I'm sure JOC is smiling down on you and would give you an 'atta boy' for your rifle choice as well as your marksmanship. tu2

Congrats! I've always used 150g Partition handloads at 3000 fps (chrono'd) out of our 60s vintage Remington BDL in 270 Win. Many elk, deer and bears have fallen to it. Now that I've given it to my son, I bought a very used Mark V in 270 Weatherby Magnum I plan to use. Same bullet a little faster expect it to work as well

Congrats again

Regards,

Chuck

Thanks for your comments.

I usually get a buck every year, but the last couple of years I’ve been on a slump.

Age and old injuries have slowed me down to where I only hunt withnin a mile of the truck. Sometimes the deer are up higher or on private land.

I was pleased to break in the new rifle and try out the 130 gr bullets.

Maybe next year I will just use my 45-70, I haven’t killed anything with it yet (although I knocked a bear down with it last year which was not recovered.)

Cheers,

I had the same saw the light moment 2 years ago. Send me your email, and I will send you a picture with the largest exit wound you ever saw no mater the caliber.

The 270 Win is my favorite of the General/deer calibers.

Is this the 270 you posted about in the Medium Bore sub-forum?

I was not allowed to read JOC growing up. My father and uncles were Elmer Keith fans. I hope I have done sufficient penance with my 270 Win that Saint Jack O’Conor is proud of me.

I hope this buck starts a hot streak for you.

Never shot a .270, always used an '06.

Lew, I hit a mulie buck in the R short ribs
at 15 feet with a 150gr Herter's Wasp waste!'
My spelling!

Exited out the L shoulder big enough I could have buried a basketball in the hole.
He'd stopped with just short ribs and butt exposed from behind a big pine.
I never looked to see if it had clipped the tree or not.

Other than coyotes with 110gr '06 I've never seen such destruction on animals other than p/dogs of course.

Thanks, and yes, it is the gun I went on about in the Medium Bore forum. LOL

The biggest exit wound I ever saw, was when I shot a muley at about 225 yards with a 154 gr PSP from a 7mm Wby Mag I used to own.

It was a lung shot and the exit looked like a small bomb had went off. Lung tissue and blood were splattered for about 5 yards and the exit hole was big enough to poke a football though.

My guess was the bullet centered a rib bone and then sent fragments of bone and shock wave everywhere.

The 270 was my go to caliber for a long, long time, and I still enjoy using it. I have settled on and have been using the 140 grain Accubonds. Best round for me in the 270. tu2

I own several dozen game rifles. But when I get serious about deer hunting I take my 1960's Sako .270 Finnbear, now out-of-production, topped with a Leupold 3-9 gloss, also out-of-production. Its load is an out-of-production Nosler Solid Base (lead tip) 130 grain propelled by out-of-production surplus 4831 at 3200 fps.

Everything about my favorite deer rig is obsolete, but it also consistently makes the deer I shoot with it obsolete, too.

Just about any bullet works in a 270 or 30-06 for deer..I used the 130 for deer and antelope, my favorite bullet was and is since I still have some is the old Western open point expanding HP 130 GR. that Jack liked in front of a dose of old world WW2 4831 and Jacks load of 62 grs. (don't try that load with modern 4831 as 58 grs is max...For elk I liked the 150 or 160 Nosler partition and over the last few years the 200 gr. Accubond in the 30-06 has been a dandy elk bullet..

Back in the mid-70s, I had a couple boxes of those old Western 130gr open points, but I never hunted game with them. Just used them for target practice.

Now I know better.

I marinated a cut up venison tenderloin in soy sauce, hot sesame seed oil, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, and toasted sesame seeds.

Grilled as a kabob with pineapple chunks; fantastic!

I have some pics but posting on AR is too much of a hassle.

I tried photobucket once but then the photos disappeared.

So you will just have to take my word on it.

(Or think I‘m lying Whatever works! LOL
