My closest was a snap shot at a nyala at 12 yards with my .376 Steyr Scout. Dead right there. My farthest was a blue wildebeest at about 175 yards with a Rem 700 Classic in .350 Rem Mag. Hit him high just above the spine and we tracked the herd the rest of the day, finally taking him down at sunset about seven hours later. On whitetail deer, my closest was 20 yards with my .308 Steyr Scout (jumped straight up and collapsed) and the farthest was about 60 yards with my Blaser in 7mm-08 (made a couple of bounds and dropped). i consider my best shot on game to be a 150-yard shot at dusk on a waterbuck with my .376 Steyr Scout, standing and using a shooting staff. It ran 80 yards before dropping and was dead when we found it, shot through the top of the heart. The most memorable encounter was the 20-yard shot mentioned above. A young whitetail buck stopped two yards in front of my ground blind, looked me over for several seconds, then turned and walked straight away. I lined up on him as he walked away and when he turned broadside at 20 yards I dropped him. [ 04-28-2003, 06:59: Message edited by: Slingster ]

CLOSEST SHOT : blacktail deer 10 yards 3 times two bucks and a doe. FARTHEST: 250 yards on a black bear Average would be about 80 yards My three best: Kodiak blacktail buck 100 yards 300 win mag 180 failsafes ruger m77 250 yard black bear 308 win pre-64 featherweight 180 core-lokt 80 yards bull elk sako synthetic 375 h-h 270gr rem fact load. My most memerable shot was on the elk. At the start of the hunt my buddys dad asked me how big of a bull I was looking for and I told him I wanted a bull with at least branched antlers. He told me that I shouldn't pass on any bull cause a spike might be all I get to see on a public land hunt general season Colorado. As it turned out the first bull I saw was a 5x5 that came into view at 80 yards broadside I can remember the bulls near side leg stepping forward for a sweet shot.

Closest shot with rifle was 11 yards on a whitetail and 18 yards on an elk. Furthest (IMHO best) about 275 yards on a wounded mule deer. (not mine) Average shot at big game............probably about 100 yards Shot most proud of.....see above ....275 yards. Three best animals: 1st 6 pt (gross 150 - net 146) Whitetail at 100 yards, on the run, 1st shot. 2nd 6 pt whitetail at 140 yards on the run. (gross 177-net 161). 2nd shot 3rd 168 net mulie at 150 yards on the run.

I live in a shotgun only state, so most of my big game (deer) have been killed with such. Closest with shogun probably 15 yards, furthest 120 yards, average 70 yards. I love to travel and hunt big game with a rifle. Those 2-300 yard shots are cake with proper equipment and a good rest. Out of about a dozen critters with rifle, average range is probably 150 yards. Furthest was a one shot kill on an Alaskan moose at about 400 yards with .300 Weatherby. Made me a believer in that round. IMO you can't really appreciate a centerfire rifle till you get out around 200 yards.

So far, the average shot on the best game animals taken by all those who've responded is ~148 yards. Not too many cartridges that wouldn't reach out (with authority) at 150 yards so I guess even the guys not sportin' magnums have a chance at a nice animal (so far, anyway )!!! OK Ill play, favorite large quarry has got to be Mulies. All distances are guestimates as the way I hunt I dont usually have time for polls (or rangefinders). Closest was about 20 yds. Farthest was maybe 250 yds, maybe more. Average is in the ballpark of 150. Tough to sort out a most memorable, too many of those and I cherish them all. On a sidenote; It is ironic to realize that the lowly 30-30 has accomplished more than all of us put together ever have and ever will in the gamefield, and yet WE consider IT inadequate. What that old model 94 might say if only it could speak..

Closest shot was a 8 yard shot on a black bear with my 7mm Rem Mag w/160 gr. Fail Safes. Furthest was a 175 yard shot on a black bear with my 7mm Rem Mag w/160 gr. Partition Golds. I'd say my average shot on a moose is 120 yards, deer is 100 yards, and bear is 75 yards. 3 best animals: Moose~140 yards, 416 Rem Mag w/350 gr. Speer Mag-Tip. Bear~30 yards, 7mm Rem Mag w/175 gr. Barnes X's, Deer~60 yards, 308 Norma w/165 gr. Barnes XBT. Most memorable shot was a coyote last winter I took on the run at 70 yards. Rolled him on the first shot after he spooked coming into my calls. 260 Remington w/100 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. [ 04-30-2003, 08:00: Message edited by: todbartell ]
