Earlier this year I posted questions regarding my then-upcoming hunt for Sheep/Moose at Chisana Alaska, thank you all for your input and advice. I just returned from the hunt, and the area and game was as-advertised. Unfortunately, I was the only one in camp not to get a sheep, although I did get a nice 54" moose. In fact, of approximately 27 total sheep-hunters this year, 24 got sheep, and of the other 2 non-sheep getters, 1 missed 2 sheep and the other wouldn't climb!!! I climbed the mountain (4) different times with my guide, but couldn't get within 1,000 yards of a legal ram, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was my guide's apparent lack of desire to spend enough time on or glassing our mountain. The outfitter was pissed-enough at this guide to offer me a return-trip at a serious discount, which speaks volumes of his integrity as an outfitter. I never complained to my guide, the wranglers or the outfitter about the hunt, and was surprised at the offer. I also heard, on my way out of camp, that my guide would soon be seeking alternate employment!! All in all, it was an awesome hunt in an incredible area; the outfitter is Pioneer Outfitters, Terry Overly being the Master Guide and owner. Speaking of my guide, he told me he worked for Ray Atkinson at one point, whom I believe is a member of this forum. Ray, if you read this post, shoot me a private message at your convenience.

Thanks again for the advice regards to gear and guns; by the way, I shot the moose at 65 yards with a 160 gr. Swift-A-Frame from my 7 mm RUM, recovered the bullet under the off-side hide, mushroomed perfectly, moose took 10 steps and was down in about 5 seconds, thru the heart-lung!!

Good hunting,
Craig Nolan

Craig - Glad you had a good hunt.
I hunted w/ Overly in 96' and my Dad & I both took sheep. He's kind of a strange bird, but he does run a good outfit.

Congrats!

Congrats on the moose and sorry about the guide. By the way, I'm curious about the comment regarding Overly being strange. He's supposed to be a pretty good guide.

Overly puts on this real macho, tough guy, anti society image. All the clothing he wears is black, his airplane is black, he rides a black horse, his dishes set at the table are black. Kind of a Johnny Cash thing I guess.
He does run a good outfit however.
