Does anyone have info. on Oxbow Lodge in Oxbow Me.

I'm interested in a moose hunt in 09.

Got there name from the Me. fish and game sight.

Are the animals large,? I'm a Elk hunter ,never been east but want to go.

You'll need to draw a moose tag first. That can take awhile.

I drew my first tag after 10 years of trying.
That was over 10 years ago.
My brother has yet to draw in over 20 years.

Now, the way it is set up these days, IF you have deep pockets.....

Most folks DID just cruise the roads, often pulling snowmobile trailers with winches to retrieve their moose. And most DID shoot the closest thing they saw.
Even saw a guy with the bench seat from his Suburban mounted on some 2X6" s up on his roof rack! We hoofed it for the most part, but tried to stay fairly close to logging roads/skid trails. Loggers MAY be persuaded to skid your moose out for $50-$100 I've been told.

I shot mine at 0700 and could get the truck within 300-400 yds of it. We (me and a brother) had to skin one side, remove quarters and back straps, then flip it and repeat. Luckily, I had taken a cheap plastic tobaggon and we puleld loads out with that.Still; ahrd to do because it dropped in a field of slash. What was ankle deep to the moose, turned out to be mid-calf to us. Got the last load in the truck at 1:00, then to town at 3:00 to check it in. Then a LONG drive home, and then started right in to cutting and wrapping.

I had premade a frame of 2X3's and furring strips, that held 2" foam insulation. It all layed flat until assembled with a coprdless drill and 2" deck screws. That became our 4'X4'X 24" cooler. Only took 10 minutes to assemble, AFTER pulling everything out of the truck bed.(we were living out of teh truck for 9 days!) Loaded meat, reloaded gear, drove to town, pulled gear to check in moose, and add 160lbs ice, then repack gear.

It CAN be done and done cheap if you have the basic skills and drive to get it done.

And MAKE SURE your co-permittee has a strong back and a weak mind!

And for Maine residents there is a shortcut to pull a tag. Guy I knew would put himself as subpermittee on 20 apps every year-he paid for them, family, friends, etc He drew every few years. Don't think I'd do that, but it's there.

I drew NH in my third year of trying ('97) and a buddy drew there on his first try. They jacked the $$$ up this year!
