This is my experence , Most guys a using 7mm to 300 cal Rifles . they are shooting 140-160 gr
in the 7mm and 165 to 180 gr in the 300.
Most scopes are from 3 x 9 to 6.5 x 20 .
A good Spotting scope is helpful and one of the most important is good Bino's at least 10 x.I have been shooting a 300 WBY 3 x 9 Swaro
with an 180 gr bullet.
My next hunt I am putting together a 7mm STW
150 gr bullet 5.5 x 22 x 56 Nightforce scope
the scope has a Ranging Rectical in it.
I am working a load with a 150 gr Rbbt ULD
bullet Ulta Low Drag.
Last is a range Finder get a good one if you don't have one. I have heard of complaints with the new Leupolds.

For southern Arizona Coues, my brother and I have used .30-06's,.300 Win Mag and .50 TC Hawken. The bolt actions have had 4x and 2.5x8 scopes.
Shots on 16 or so bucks tagged have ranged from 20 to 350 yards. The average probably 175 to 200 yards.
My current Coues rifle is a custom Ray Price Mauser in .257 Roberts with a 6x Leupold.
Good hunting,
Mike

I'm probably going Coues hunting in Mexico next January. If so, I'll either take one of my 270s or my 7mag.

In fact, this is just cause for trying yet another load I've been considering in my 7mag:

140 AB. I've been looking at that to see if I can get accuracy as good as my 150 Btip.

I use a .270 Win. shooting 130g. Nosler BT's, Leupold 3.5/10 Vari-X III Scope, Swarovxki 10x42 EL binoculars. Works for me.

Good binoculars are a real plus, as is a tripod to use for glassing.

My Coues deer rifle:

* 300 Wby Vanguard (restocked and fiberglass bedded)
* 4-12x40 Redfield scope
* 168 Barnes TSX loads
* Snipe-pod brand tripod

Life's too short to hunt with an ugly rifle (in a tupperware stock).

A lot depends on how you hunt them. Many in Arizona shoot them at some pretty impressive ranges with special rifles and big spotting scopes.

I have only hunted the coues in Texas Big Bend country. My favorite caliber is a 250-3000 in a small ring Mauser or a Savage 99EG or 99F. I like the 87 gr. bullet, but the 100 gr. is effective. The WW Silver tips are very good on these light bodied deer. We have always hunted them on horses or saddle mules by riding around the rim rocks, jump them out, step off the horse, find a rest of sorts or shoot offhand, It is my favorite way to hunt Mule deer or Coues. It is my favorite hunt of all.
