I am considering going on an axis hunt. I've decided that if I go, I'll take my .257 Roberts. I have killed whitetails with the 117 Hornady, and it worked really well. However, I like to try new things. What would you recommend for axis bucks. Right now I have 100gr nosler ballistic tips, 120gr Sierra HPBT gamekings, and 100 grain speer hot cores on hand. Which would you choose? Any other ideas. Perhaps the 115gr Partition?

Thanks for the ideas

Gib

Axis are a bit larger than the size of the typical whitetail over most of the country, or about the same size as a northern or Canadian whitetail. They might average about the same size as a muley buck. In other words, whatever you would use on whitetail is appropriate for axis.

While any of the bullets you list would probably work, I see no reason to vary from your tried and true Hornady 117. The Nosler Partition is always good.

I'm with Stonecreek - your 117s ought to work just fine. Of course, if you want to try something new, the Game King or Partition are up to the task. I'd shy away from the BT at this point, just 'cuz axix are a bit heavier than whitetails and I'd like the additional penetration provided by the heavier bullets. Incidentally, my wife killed a very large cow oryx with her .257 Roberts using those Hornadys, so you should be well armed for axis. Good luck on your hunt - axis is some of the best eating venison you'll find.

Gib,

If you are looking for something new, Groove Bullets are relatively new. We manufacture a 101gr EXP bullet that would work well for your application. You are going to look long and hard to find a bullet for your 257 Roberts that will penetrate as well as the 101gr EXP Groove Bullet.

We had a young lady last January drop a 150lb hog using the 257 Roberts and the 101gr EXP. The bullet exited and dropped the hog in its tracks.

You can see here story and results on our web site.
