First Rio Grande hunt

My first hunt for Rio Grande Turkey turned into a great success. I took my limit of four toms. Ranges were from 10 to 54 yards using a Benelli SBE 3.5" 12 gauge with Winchester Supreme #5 shot. Factory full choke did an excellent job. On Sunday I worked a total of 15 birds that I could have killed. I took my best and oldest bird sporting double beards and 1.25 inch hooks (spurs). Weight was only 17.75 pounds but seeing how he came in with eight hens, he must have been on a diet. The Texas panhandle is a Turkey hunters paradise and the Rio's, although smaller than our Eastern variety, make up in beauty what they give up in weight. Good hunting, LDK

Thanks Wendell. I attribute all of it to Texas having such a grand management of their wildlife resources and a commitment of ranchers doing likewise. Weather played a big role. Friday we had snow, slush, then it rained. The wind blew so hard the rain came down sideways. Opening morning (Sat) all the birds came in wet. Sunday temps reached the 80s and the Sun was bright in the clear skies. From the little experience I have, I felt it would turn the Tom's on and it did. I was just in the right place and the right time. Good hunting, LDK
