I know several locals that have been going there for years and they have invited me to go along this year. I have hunted a couple of times in the Northern part of the state but, I've never hunted around Montrose.

I was wondering if any of you have been hunting in area 62 and how were the heard #s?

Thanks,

I haven't heard numbers, but there is 1 herd, and it's a good one.

Unit 62 is the the east half of the Uncompahgre Plateau. Unit 61 is the west half. Unit 62 is over the counter and unit 61 is draw only. It is really the same group of elk, but the hunter ratio is ridiculously high in 62. Many waiting for them to cross the road and get into the area.

What to expect. The plateau is fairly rugged, but not tall or steep. Most of it is readily accessible with an ATV and it is swarmed with hunters during the regular seasons.

Lots of information on the area here

Some good elk there to be taken, but lots of competition.

Good luck.

My first few years of Colorado hunting were out in 62. I haven't been up there in a few years but it gets a lot of pressure both local and non-resident due to the easy access and good elk herd. Many ATV's and lots of orange. I've heard the deer are coming back and the elk herd has always been healthy. One challenge is that depending on the season, the weather can push them down on to private land. Your best bet is to get as far from a road as you can (tough up there as there are a lot of roads) and thus away from the riders -- er, hunters. It is about as easy walking in most places as you'll find for elk country. Some of the most successful hunters I've seen up there hunt whitetail style, find a good stand near a game trail as they head from the aspens into the dark timber and wait. They really get pushed around a lot so the guy who sits still in a likely spot has a good chance.
