Now we're talking-here is a great cartridge. I call it the 06 Improved(grins). Me thinks old Jack was a smart fella by using this round so much.

My G33/40 has a 25" Lija on it,here are a couple of loads for it-they shoot great!

130 Nozler bt=3300
135 MK's=3300
150 Sie or Noz pt=3100

for 22" tubes I've found em to run like this

130's=3200
150's=3100

I use R22 and they shoot great

Out of one .270 I sold recently that was fitted with a 24" Hart barrel, I was as able to reach 3200 fps. with Reloader 22 and 130 gr. Noslers with acceptable pressures. This same rifle went over 3100 fps. with Hornady 140 gr. Light Magnum factory ammo.

Another .270 with a 22" barrel produces 3160 fps. with 130 gr. Noslers and IMR4831, and 3002 fps. with 150 gr. Noslers and H4831.

I don't know why, but I've always had great luck getting .270s to shoot like crazy with a variety of loads, and to push the bullets out at high speeds.

As far as I'm concerned Winchester's early claims for the .270 Win. are fully justified, and with today's bullets, it's a better cartridge than ever.

I've owned too many 270WCF chambered rifles to count, but with one or two exceptions they have always produced 3100+/- fps with 130grs, 2950 to 3000fps with 150grs. The only 140s I've tried did right at 3000fps in the one rifle they were used in.

I chrony'd mine last week with the new Hornaday LM 130 SST. The barrel is 22". I was disappointed to achieve a mere 3060 FPS. Of course, it was only 35 degrees outside. I don't know how much more speed I'd pick up at 70 degrees.

I commend the other posters on the velocities for the 270.Before I got a chrony I had a super load of 55gr IMR 4350 with 130 gr Sierras. with it I took 6 mature whitetail bucks and 20 coyotes at ranges of 200-350 yards. The worst thing I did was chrony it....2850f/s. I will try some different fuels as soon as it warms up.
I guess the deer never knew that I had a "slow load"
Rifle M70 Winlite 22" barrel
I still have not seen a better combo for mixed county whitetail hunting.

I only chronied one load for my .270:

Hornady Custom ammo(not light mag), 130 SST = 3040 fps.

Savage 110-DL, 22 inch barrel.

My 24.3" Sako yields 3200 fps with a 130 bullet and a lower-than-typical load of H4831. Seems to have a tight chamber and a fast barrel, because it can't safely be loaded with loads most manuals list as maximum.

A friend with a similar Sako is getting 3300 fps with a load of VV N160, but this is a new load he is trying and I'm suspicious that his pressures may be too high for comfort.

My Browning BAR 22" yields 3050 with some older Remington factory loads. I doubt that current standard factory loads (not "light magnums, etc.) would run as much as 3000 fps in this gun.

With 22" barrel model 700, I've reached 3100 fps with 130s and 3040 with 140s without straining anything. I've also clocked 150s going at 2850, but never really experimented too much with them in this rifle and expect I could get over 2900 fps. This particular rifle had a very long throat, so I could seat bullets out fairly far and I suspect I could easily exceed book loads, but was more than happy with the velocity I was already getting. Interestingly enough, I've also clocked the 180 gr Barnes originals in this gun at close to 2750 fps.

More recently, I've had a custom .270 built, which has a 24" barrel. I've only just started tinkering with this gun, but H-4831 gives me just over 3100 w/130s (60 gr) and 2950 (58 gr) with 150s. I haven't tried too many other loads yet, but 140s reached 3060 with IMR-4831 (56 gr) and 150s chronied at 3050 fps using 58 gr RL-22. These are all averaged velocities.

I've been more than happy with my .270s and find them the easiest to load for out of my current calibers as far as finding loads that deliver reported velocities with great accuracy. For a few years, it seems reloading manufacturers really backed off on .270 loads, but several of the newer manuals, such as Barnes and Hornady, seem to have stepped it up a bit.

22" bbl'd Win 70 (stainless) featherweight:

130's: RL22-3,150, H4831sc-3,100
140's: RL22-3,050, H4831sc-3,000

Both these powders give exceptional accuracy. I prefer, however, the H4831sc as it's "temperature insensitive"... that sort of consistancy from summer range work to fall hunting means more than fifty fps. Also, in my experience RL powders don't have the best lot-to-lot consistancy.

What about with heavier bullets. Have any of you tried 150's. I recently acquired some Remington 150's and Nosler 160's specifically for bear and elk. Any suggestions?

Frank- while I have yet to of shot much wiht the 160 Noz I do think the world of it. Did use it for a bit of bear hunting ans a bit on elk.
I've found the bullet to shoot quite well and with R22 I am able to get over 2800. Never have done much load work with it though.
It'll penetrate that's for sure. A friend of mine from the Flathead shot a 5 point bull end to end with one. The bullet went in the Texas end and exited the other end. Said bull expired rather quickly!

I haven't tried 22 myself, always stayed with 4831 guess its time to try as most of the responses have included this powder. I am wondering how it passes through the uniflow. Is it a short-cut powder or a long grain. My uniflow seems to hang up with the longer powders and I end up measuring every load. Thanks.
