Gentlemen,

This is a post out of curiousity. Which countries besides the US are most gun-friendly, both in terms of private ownership for defensive uses and also for hunting? Which ones are not?

Hey stranger, Most everyone from the country is friendly. Most guns are pretty darn personable too once they've been along a couple times.

Most Middle Eastern countries are very gun friendly with some even permitting the ownership of fully automatic firearms. In Europe, Britain and Ireland are very gun-unfriendly with handgun ownership banned and air rifles restricted to very low power limits. Switzerland is very gun friendly and even requires every one of it's citizens to own an automatic rifle in readiness to defend his country. France and Italy do not permit the ownership of guns chambered in service calibers, but they allow the ownership of silenced guns and even encourage them in certain areas in order to reduce noise pollution.

Japan is another monumentally anti-gun nation and you have a waiting period of 10 years between applying for a permit to own an ISU rimfire rifle/pistol and getting it. Singapore and Hong Kong also prohibit the ownership of guns except at gun clubs ahere you must deposit your guns and in Singapore, carrying a gun outside your club invites a mandatory death sentence by hanging.

In my country, India, we are allowed to own only three guns - a rifle of caliber smaller than 8mm, a handgun of caliber lesser than .32 cal and a shotgun. We have a number of lawsuits challenging these restrictions as well as a ban on importing guns that was laid down in 1984 by the socialist government under Indira Gandhi (shortly before she was assassinated).

If you would like to know which organisations are the most anti-gun, they must definitely be the BBC and The Economist. Both even indulge in gutter journalism trying to sling mud at Charlton Heston and the NRA as well as at pro gun organisations worldwide. Would that those who had the power to do so, boycotted advertising on the BBC as well as in The Economist!

I am Italian but I live in south east France, at only few km from italian border. Until few years ago, France was quite gun frendly, permitting to buy and own semi auto pistols, revolvers, hunting rifles and semi auto military looking rifles in every caliber (with some restrictions). But recently, the socialist governement made more and more difficulty to give permissions to buy new guns. Unfortunately, 2 weeks ago a psycopatic went to a town hall in the north of the country, killed 8 town councillors and injured many other with 2 Glock pistols that were legally owned. Few days later another one killed a policeman with an AK47 illegally owned. That was enough to promote an urgent law that will certainly strongly limit the possession of guns. May be all semi auto guns (pistols and rifles) will be confiscated to honest citizens. What a shame! I believe that a Country that do not trust their citizens, reducing strongly the right to posses guns,or forbidding them, admits his flop. This law will make France gun unfrendly. In Italy we had many restrictions some years ago, but now the situation is getting better. We may own 6 pistols and revolvers of almost every caliber, and even more, with a collector permit(only 9 mm Parabellum - Luger is forbidden); we may also own an unlimited number of rifles even semiauto versions of military ones....... but I am afraid that winds of gun enemies will blow everywhere more and more powerful in the future. Best regards - Lorenzo

There were two amok runs in Germany in a short time. The newer one, involving 17 killed ( 14 teachers ) sadly with legal guns. We may expect tighter gun laws shortly.

Austria is relatively gun friendly. Some years ago it was near perfect: no registration, everybody had the RIGHT to apply for two handguns ( more afterwards, with some shooting results ), all long arms free, except for some semi autos. After somebody shooting some persons ( at a school ), legislation got very much tighter.

Hermann

Perhaps we should not question the guns, but rather the motivs: better teachers?

In Pakistan we can have as many guns for which licenses are obtained. For each gun you must have a license by city government. License issued after police verification of no crminal record etc.

No restriction on calibres except a few russian assault rifle calibres.

Fee on renewal of license every year.

Limit on number of ammunition kept and carried per license (normally 25/100).

Reloading rarely allowed. No local source of reloading components.

No fully automatic weapons on regular license. Special permits for full auto by central govt.

Current govt. is hard on guns. Ban on new licences for last two years. Ban on display of guns. Drive against illegal guns (Good move). Concealed carry allowed.

In sweden you may have licence for 6 long guns if you have passed the hunters exam. ( A shooting and theory test.) Licences for handguns are for some qualified hunters and for contest shooters.

its not quite easy for a hunter to get more than 6 lecences today, and also the contest shooters are facing some problem.

It could, indeed, be better!

Best regards,

Fritz

The sad part is that all these countries have just slightly more strict laws than U.S., however, we have a constitutional amendment that is designed to prevent us from being like these countries.

jrslate,

In Belgium you can own 10 handguns with a license given by the police for each handgun. If you wan to have more than 10 handgun you need to ask for the Governor and this way every 5 over handguns. Regarding rifle you can purchase all rifles that you want exept rifles with Nato calibers (.223,.308,...) for these rifles same way than handguns.

In Belgium you can't hunt with handguns only with rifles.

What is the purpose of banning military calibers? Is it designed to allow the government to shut off ammunition supply at will?

Military calibers aren't banned just restricted. I know it is a stupid law, because 9mm use by military isn't restricted as .308 ,.223

I can only tell you it's Belgium!
