December 1, 2006 turned out to be a good day for hunting. We just had a winter blast of snow and ice, and with the clouds clearing the deer were on the move. I started off that day with my father in one of our stands. We stayed there until about noon. We went back to the house to grab some grub. After a quick lunch we decided to go to another stand. We got into the stand at about 12:45 pm and for some reason we both eneded dosing off. I did the whole waking up like your falling thing and got back to looking. About ten minutes after awaking I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I looked and could see the rear end of one deer in the hedge row and a doe following. I pointed the deer out to my dad.
We waited just a little bit and then a rack and body appeared on the other side of the hedge row. I pulled up the binocs. and counted what I thought to be 8 points. I couldn't believe the spread on this thing. I let my dad take a look and he turned and said to me that he wouldn't shoot it, and I thought he was out of his mind. Come to find out later he said he was trying to keep me calm(Thanks Dad). He then said lets sit and see what he does. We sat and watched this deer for a good 30 minutes as he and this doe grazed around.
Finally he made a move for the hedge row, and my dad says take him (This is where the fun began). So I pulled up my Thompson Contender 44. magnum pistol shooting a 240 gr. hornady XTP, put him in my sights and squeezed the trigger. BOOM. He flinched and turned directions and headed the other way. We both said ok he is hit now he will drop, but he just kept walking. So my dad handed me his Encore Thompson Contender rifle in .243 ack. imp. and said plug him again. I then raised the rifle, put the crosshairs on the sweet spot and squeezed again. BOOM. He dropped like a bad habit. I sat in aw that the 44 didnt take him down.
My dad and I let the deer lay for a little while before I went and claimed my prize. We get out of the stand and go towards the buck, which was only 100 yds away. I get to him and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a ten pt. with an unbelievable spread. Right off I start looking for my entrance and exit wounds. At first I looked at the side on which I used the pistol, and as I am feeling around I found the .243 bullet right underneath the skin. I kept on looking. It was said to say but I actually missed with my pistol, of which I have used on other deer hunts and been successful. I guess all you can say is that I was extremely lucky this big guy didn't take off. I was also impressed with the 100 gr. .243 partion reload and kill power it had that day. Thanks for the fun hunt dad!

Well here is the pic. Thanks for reading.

To answer your question toomany, I was using a 100 gr. partion bullet made by Nosler.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome, and great comments.
