If so, for what and where? And what are you doing to prepare physically?

I'm headed to NWT for dall in early Aug. Looking forward to the beautiful scenery of Canada and especially the nice weather. In Austin, TX it's been 104 degrees so it's been really hard to do any kind of outdoor training like running or biking. I did sign up for boot classes and that's been a tremendous help. But even then our running exercises have been cut back because of the heat.

What are you doing?

Yes I'm going Bighorn Sheep hunting this year. I drew a Wyoming tag.I've been walking or bike riding almost every day. I also have horses so that helps a little. Good luck on your hunt.

Yup, we do it here in Alaska every year. Walk to Wally World to get our harvest card (free) and go sheep hunting.

i'd give my left arm to be able to hunt the mountains again. Knees and $20,000 worth of titanium in my back say i can't do that anymore. For those of you that can, DO IT. Get yourself into shape, and DO IT. yes, its expensive, but have you ever heard of anyone lying on their deathbed that said they wished they wouldn't have. Just go DO IT while you can.

I was lucky enough to draw a Desert Bighorn Sheep tag here in Nevada. I've been hiking with a pack, biking, and hitting the weights. Hopefully I'll be ready by November when the hunt starts.

Congrats to you guys who have drawn tags. I started late on entering and only have 6 or 7 pts/state. My fear is getting too old to do the workouts necessary to enjoy a good sheep hunt. So I just forked out the cash...
Hope you guys score some nice ones and take a few wolves while you're there too!

Stone sheep in BC, August. Being a resident and getting to buy tags over the counter for them is a real blessing. Smiler

I hope I don't have to go again. It was a pain getting in shape. But I would if I had to.

drew a tag for Rocky mt. bighorn sheep in Idaho.hunt starts Aug.3oth

running every morning and hitting weights--working on gut, lower back and legs mainly.
power climbing up mt. on weekends-----climbing a steep mountain at hard pace staight up. This is not how I hunt but just trying to build muscle and endurance-good way break in boots too.

other than that, just buying a bunch crap I don't really need but want, like new ultra light gun and new pack, boots etc.. Big Grin

nothin sweeter than the smell of fresh blood on your hunting boots

Bluefin- Quickshot described the right regimen. I too hiked up very steep slopes nearby(Sierra foolhills) with weighted pack, also five mile course in my hilly neighborhood wi 60 lb pack 3-4X a wk and jogged on alternating days. Did this for 3-4 mos. You may not have that kind of terrain. If not hit the stairstepper at your gym. I also hit the gym 3-4X a wk and did cardio and weights. Mostly worked on legs, wind & upper body(for backpack). Don't know what your age is, but don't worry about it; just get in shape. I was 65 when I did my 1st sheep hunt and did two more plus a goat hunt. Did my 2nd goat hunt last Nov. @ age 73. Was 70 when I got my Dall ram and got my goat in Nov. The goat hunt is tougher. This Fall will be hunting antelope in WY and elk (with my oldest son) in CO. I think us old guys can do a lot more than we, or others, think. Lot of the fun of these type of hunts is the planning, preparation, and assembling of gear, time at the range, working
up loads, etc. Enjoy- and take lots of pics.

Olguy,

I saw your post and pics of the dall. VERY NICE! I have a Stone, dall and a couple of mntn goat hunts under my belt.
The situation here in Austin, TX is you just can't go outside and run. It's been 104F for over a month. The evening temps are still 90 - 95F.
Been able to get muscles and cardio in but can't work the lungs as running is just out of the question.
It's good to see ya'll who have won draws. Gives me hope that it's a viable option. Lol

Oh, and Olguy, I'm 46. I hope to have my mountain hunts done in the next 5 years. After that I want nice flat trails for walking or cushioned seats for fishing. Smiler You do have my respect for hitting those mntns still.

I am tagging along with two of my sons who drew this year, so I have been riding my bike to and from work, 4 miles a day, that's about it. I think I will play camp cook and support officer! LOL!
