I used to drive to Wyoming and buy "Doe/fawn" antelope and deer management permits.

It was a ball as often one could buy five of each. Strictly a hide and meat game but still a lot of fun.

Is this still available?

Unfortunatly they are in most units. This is why we can't get our herds back up to the early 90's population. Granted in some area's it probable doesn't hurt but it sure has keep our deer and antelope herds down in the west. And with this on going drought we have had for 10 years you think the game and fish would cut back

Oh, the all mighty dollar. killpc

Where I live I can buy 2 buck tags and 2 doe tags. The population is way down, I did kill 2 bucks last fall but no does and this year I will only kill one buck. Game and fish is under pressure from the ranchers to keep the numbers down but I think they have gone too far,I have way less than 50% of the goats we had 2 years ago.

My buddies ranch has maybe 20 head on 20,000ac, he has hunters coming this fall and has told them don't expect much for goats. 2 years ago there was 2-300 on the place.

I drove from Jackson to Casper two weeks ago. I saw more goats between Shoshone and Casper than I have for 20+ years.

Coming back home, we drove via Muddy Gap and Jeffery City. In that stretch there were very few visible.

Perhaps it was migration related.

P.S. The rainbow fishing on the Grey Reef was hot. A couple were real toads!

I hunt in area 3 in NE Wyoming and usually I can get 4 deer doe tags. Last year was the first time I had seen any antelope in the area and they were two properties from mine.

I drove from Jackson to Farson,WY and saw thousands of Antelope myself, drove thru Alpine coming up from Driggs, Idaho pulling a Horse trailer and saw about 30-40 Mountain goats along the Hwy heading north to jackson...Lots of game...and too many elk!

...and too many elk bsflag

With the hard winter they had over in that area all the animal are bunch up in the same locations. Drive that road in the summer and I'll bet you won't make that same remark.

Steve, you might have been in WY longer than me, but I'm not stupid, i'm in jackson and live not too far from the elk refuge, the count was as high as 12000-plus, true they migrate out towards the end of spring, but they are everywhere here. Elk numbers might be down in some locations but here its a different story, The state can't even get enough kids to hunt them here during the kids hunt in the refuge, my kid just goes to the fairgrounds and picks up a tag...that easy, they tried to give out 70 tags last year, only about 30 or so kids showed up to get them. The big issue is more cows need to be taken out.

I don't know what you call a harsh winter, we did get record snow fall this year, but we only had negative temps. for about a week, alot different from where I came from in Alaska. Government subsidized feeding of the elk in the refuge is a huge plus to the several herds that stay in the refuge for the winter. I've been here all winter...Harsh?...hell no!!! I was skiing with my kids almost every weekend...winter wonderland is what I call it. you want to see harsh...go to the Brooks range!!!

First off I never called you stupid...
When I say harsh, I mean a harsh winter for our wildlife(Wyoming, since we were talking about Wyoming not Alaska) compared to the last ten or so years.

And the report I heard for the elk was down below 7500 not 12000. That herd I believe was up near 22,000 before the wolves.

I raised the flag... because of you're statement, too many elk.

And I could'nt agree with you more on the wolves. In fact I might go wolf hunting in the morning.

Too many tags handed out? Could be the G&F would rather have the antelope shot/eaten than have them die off.

at a G&F meeting several yrs ago we were told that 85% of their operating budget comes from the sale of deer and antelope licenses.that and drought, harsh winters and operating in the red the last 20 yrs is what happened to wyomings deer/antelope herds.you should of seen it in 1970

They are dying off and are continuing to do so. I was at the ranch today and found some fresh, not bloated dead goats, they deer are also dropping, we don't know why but the antelope numbers in NE Wyoming have dropped a lot, my rancher friends don't want any does shot this year and the bucks will be few and far between this fall.
