So I am an American Serviceman, working in Germany. I obtained by German hunting license which provides me the opportunity hunt in Germany and purchase weapons. Those weapons are registered with US Forces here in Germany.
I am returning in May to hunt Spring Black Bear and want to bring one of the rifles with me from Germany for the hunt. Not sure if the CBP form 4457 will work in this instance. CPB website isn't real helpful with this nuance.
Anybody know what forms from CBP I may need to have filled out prior to coming back to the States for a week.
I know the process to import the weapons upon PCS'ing back to the States, don't think those apply in this case. Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. I always assumed that the 4457 form was used to verify that any item listed on it was in possession of the individual before he traveled out of the USA, and subsequently returned. I think they can charge the returning traveler duty or taxes on any valuable item not listed. It seems to me that common sense on the part of the US Customs agent would allow a serviceman to enter the country without paying duty. But that could be a stretch. I guess it depends on which agent you encounter, a good one or a prick. Maybe there's another form, or maybe some US official on your base in Germany could fill out and certify the form. Not sure if this has helped, hopefully someone else can be more helpful. Have a great hunt, and if nothing else, get the 4457 form certfied in US prior to returning overseas.

Talk to your CO, if he don't know, he can sure
find out fairly soon.

Don't know what a "weapon" is though. Only one I ever had was on the end of my hand! That didn't require any forms!

Go talk to JAG.
