Antelope call?

I drew an Antelope tag in Wyoming this year. This will be my first attempt and I can't wait. I was watching OLN last week and they were on a Lope hunt in Montana. The Lope started to move when he spotted the hunters and the guide took out a call and blew it. The Lope stopped in his tracks once which allowed the hunter to get a shot off. What type of call did he use?

Thanks

Don't know if there is a specific antelope call, but have used a dying jackrabbit call. 'Lopes seem to stop and see what happened. thumb

I once knew an old lumberjack who was also a Wyoming hunting guide. His approach was to "ease" up to them with a whole lot of patience, he would take a few steps then have a cigarette. He also mentioned the fact that they are curious animals.

Hi Comet
Antelope make a bleat sound much like a deer. Try a soft call from a grunt tube made for deer or if in a bind, quaff a beer quickly and burp over a 3-4 second interval!

Comet: Good luck on your upcoming Hunt! I wish you best of luck on your first Antelope Hunt (it seems like only yesterday when I went on my first Antelope Hunt - actually it was 1969!)!
remember you can Hunt them all day long and mid-day is just as good Hunting as early and late.
I have used the Lohmans Antelope call for many years now. The last time I saw these for sale they still came with a cassette tape that is very informative and helpful. $15.00 was what I saw as the last price for one of these.
I hang mine (my Lohmans Antelope call) around my neck and "snort/squall" at Buck Antelope if they are trotting off and I want to stop them. This snort/squall usually stops them and they often turn broadside to me and then turn their heads back to look directly at me. This is the perfect time to judge the horns and take up the slack on your trigger (remember to accurately estimate both the range and the wind!) and get off a good shot.
Try to hit the opening day, try not to shoot at running Antelope, do some pre-Hunt scouting and get out of the truck in an area you have seen good Bucks and secrete yourself not outlined or skylined on a ridge.
I have a lot of success just waiting in areas I know Antelope traverse through.
Back to the Lohman call - it is made to be able to simulate the rutting/territorial snorts of the Buck Antelope. In Wyoming the rut runs from about the first of September to the first few days of October. That Lohman call and an Antelope decoy will bring them in during the above times. I am guessing you will be Hunting just after this time and that call will usually stop a retreating Buck if it has not been shot at or spooked real bad!
If just alerted the Bucks usually will stop out at 350 - 450 yards from what they sensed endangered them. So try the snort/squall a couple of times if need be to get them to stop.
Again best of luck on your Hunt and take lots of pictures!

an antelope call!

Contact the Eastman's Journal. They know where to get them. I'm going to order one too. I'll be in unit 32. But, once the shooting starts, you won't have much luck with a call.

Another good call is the Critter Call, it is out of Colorado (Laporte or Lagrande?). Major Bodkins makes the call and it is the best call I've ever used. By that I mean you can make so many sounds off of it you can use it for a bunch of critters. (I've called in yotes/cats/bruins/elk/deer/fox and a few more with it)

First time I used it we called in a really nice buck down in Wyo, it came in from 800 yds out.

Last buck I called in with the call it came from 600 yards. I took it at 81 yards with my 44, it had come to 30 yds, but I spooked it.

Bottom line I'd definately take a look at getting one of these. It is a very good open reed call.

Good luck to you
