I just won a charity auction hunt for 2 in Colorado, it is a private Ranch hunt, but is on units 82 and 86 I believe. The ranch is about 80 miles east of Gunnison. Has anyone hunted this area of the state, any comments on game quality? The hunt was priced right 2 hunter 1 deer and Elk each, 6 days room/board, guide $2500. I figured I couldn't go wrong and since it is a taxable donation, what the heck.

Looking for any information on the area.

What ranch will you be hunting from?
Is the hunt on private ground in these units or is it ranch based hunt on BLM and National Forest?
On the Elk don't expect huge Bulls but you have a good chance of getting a Bull just depends on your expectations. Elk numbers are good in that part of the state but as I said it is not known for tremendous Bulls. For the Deer it all depends on the amount of pressure that the hunting area see's. If there is lots of pressure the big Bucks will be hard if not impossible to find, good odds of harvesting an average 4 point buck (western count)( 8 or 10 pointer for you easterners)through most of that part of the country as deer are just about everywhere.
If you are hunting out of Villa Grove and are to hunt in unit 82 the mountains take off steeply from the valley floor ( upper San Luis valley) and rise to 14,000' at the summit. The country starts off as sage then rises to steep Oak brush and steeper aspen pockets with fir and spruce fingers upt to the steep dark timber all the way to timberline at 11,500' to 12,000'.
Did I say it was steep?
The Sangre de Cristo's are steep mountains so get in shape to enjoy your hunt.
Good luck.

Home of Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Try this for a starting point and zero in from there.
