Man out walking his dog in local park. Officials said Tuesday that the annual Thunder in the Highlands fireworks event originally scheduled for Friday in West Milford, about 35 miles northwest of Newark, has been postponed until July 9. It's to be held in the same park where the bear charged the man and dog who were walking on an off-road bicycle trail. The dog suffered serious injuries and required veterinary treatment. The hiker had minor cuts and bruises. Patrick Carr, a black bear expert with the state Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the bear has been classified as aggressive and will be euthanized if caught. NJ is just another large victim disarment zone.

Tough shite. I am tired of friggin' owners who have unleashed dogs. Just last week a huge German Shepherd (clearly a nice, friendly dog) jumped up on me and muddied my jacket. Owner sez to me "He's OK - he's harmless" I sez, Fug you and kicked the goddam dog in his nuts. Dog owners need to control their animals - this bear case might not be one of those but I have little sympathy for obnoxious owners. Oxon

Last evening I had to pepper spray a big Rotweller when I was biking. The dog came out of its yard around a fence and started to chase me. I gave it two sprays the frist one stopped it once the 2nd one stopped and the owner was able to call it back into the yard. The dog got to with in 6 feet or so of me barking and running towards me. I kept going about 5 min later the owner pulled up along side my bike in her car and was mad I sprayed her dog saying it wouldn't hurt any body it was just barking. I just told her kept your dog off the road. She turned around and left mad. I 130lb or so dog come running at me barking is going to have something happen to it if it dosen't stop when I yell at it.

Well there is something to say for dogs not on leashes. A Yellow Lab showed up were I live. So I just watered him and gave him some of my chili I was eating. Didn't give it a second thought. Well the dog has hung around for the last three weeks and I guess I have a dog now. Can't be more than a year old. The vet I know took a look at him and gave him a clean bill of heath and all the shots. I am going to let her hunt deer with me this fall. I have not had a dog in a very long time My last dog saw me thru my youth I was 7 and had to put her down when I was 28 years old. So I now have a Yellow Lab, and seems that he has a good nose and well we are going to try to make a gun dog and maybe shoot some birds. Its nice to have a companion. Funny my last dog was also an abandoned dog that found me. I named him Traveler. Some of you may know of the name.ANV

Around here, that wouldn't even qualify as a bear attack. From a pamphlet, I picked up, at the County office; LOOSE DOGS CAN ATTRACT AND IRRITATE BEARS. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. Oxon After reading your post and seeing that you are from Nebraska, I wondered where you lived in Nebraska with such an anti-dog attitude. The dog jumped up on you? Really too bad. In the open country people usually expect that-even from over friendly dogs never sent to "training and obedience" schools -or maybe, a dog just happy to see you. And you kicked a German Shepherd in the nuts? If he was a full grown male I'm surprised you are alive to tell us about it. BTW, don't humans come ahead of bears? -and, yes, I'll shoot any bear who menaces a human being. It's our planet-not theirs when it comes to who lives or dies. Clear enough what my sentiments are? You sound like a greenie troll.

I have no issues with "friendly" dogs, but agressive ones loose? Well... they make me glad that humans invented firearms. With a few notable exceptions most dogs seem to want to be my friend, which is somewhat odd to me since I am not a "dog person"... three of my four immediate neighbors have dogs that obey me better than they do their owners. There was the neighbor who kept Rottweilers a block or so over (mind that the minimum lot size where I live is just under 3acres and most houses are on double lots) who I had to pointedly explain that I can release the safety and empty my 10mm Colt one hell of a lot faster than I can dial them or 911 on my cell phone... Fortunatly I never had to shoot their dog... unfortunatly another neighbor did... with a 3 rounds of 12ga buckshot The dog owner sued, the judge asked them as he dismissed the case at the first hearing "Are you stupid or something?" (my favorite rhetorical question) As for bears? my "no shoot signal" on any bear within 25yards is it's rapidly departing asshole. If I see any other part of a bear within that range there's gonna be a dead bear. We have bears in the neighborhood, they try real hard (mostly sucessfully) to be invisible. the street I live on is called "Gun Club Road" for a damned good reason. I doubt I need to explain why I moved OUT of New Jersey AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame. *We Band of 45-70er's* 35 year Life Member of the NRA NRA Life Member since 1984
