Quote: In the back of your truck? My fastest deer kill ever was a deliberate liver shot. Just slumped down dead. Aimed right behind the last rib on a broadside shot - the deer was "hiding" behind a tree. A friend had suggested the shot a week or two before, saying that because of the amount of blood processed by the liver it was always 100% fatal and often as quick as a heart shot. Sure was quick dead!

The answer depends what shot presentation you get and whether or not you are willing to loose good edible meat. Deer are easy to drop with a .270. It is where the .270 really shines and comes to its right. 1.- fast expander like ballistic tip broadside in the lungs is most spectacular, but other standard bullets work great too on that shot. 2.- The shoulder-spinal shot( bang-flop),use a tougher bullet here, specially on big northern bucks. 3.- Neck shot ( bang-flop)( side ways or face-on into throat patch). 4.- Heart shot 5.- Head shot( bang-flop) Deer are so easy to kill fast with a decent hit and an appropriate bullet, specially with a .270 class rifle.

In the vitals ,Why do they call them that ? Deer broadside , I generally shoot right behind the shoulder . But I am not against shooting the head or neck . When we talk of instant kills , please everyone be realistic . Yes I have witnessed instant and not so instant from shots I have fired as well as others . Practice should include target shooting that incorperates sighting in on a small specific area . I have switched to shooting 4" diamond shaped targets and forcing myself to hold at the bottom most point of it . By pin-pointing where I hold on paper helps me be more consistant on where I hold on game .
