Looking for a guided cow elk hunt for 2017.

I've used the services of an outfitter in northeastern NM for over 10 years but, for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to want me for a client anymore. If you're an old-timer on this board you might remember me shilling a bit for the outfitter but now he won't even answer my inquiries; what a way says thanks to a long time repeat customer!

I am not in good physical condition and have bum knees and shoulders so the country has to be easy to get around in. Long hikes at high altitude are out of the question. Ideally the hunt would include accommodations but staying in a motel works too.

Not interested in any sort of high fence "hunt." Also not looking for a D.I.Y. hunt because I cannot handle an elk by myself and none of my friends are hunters.

Any ideas?

If you can handle 6000' to 8000' elevation, the NW corner of Colorado is what you're looking for. Check for outfitters in the Craig-Meeker-Steamboat Springs area (there are a lot of them) and go from there.

Check with Beaverhead Outfitters in south west New Mexico. Jack Diamond and his family are great people with an excellent hunting operation.

Kiowa outfitters hunts the Vermejo for cow elk. I took one of my daughters on that hunt a few years ago. I think it will meet your needs.

Ahhh. Got it. I think there is another outfitter that runs cow hunts on a different part of the Vermejo. Can't think of the name but Google probably knows.

The only problem with doing a cow elk hunt in Colorado is that the tags are draw only.

I have been hunting with a guide in Collbran, Colorado, east of Grand Junction in unit 421 since 1992.

Since 1997 doing Late Season cow elk hunts when I can draw a tag. Hunts take place in December thru early January. These are usually/nearly always one day hunts. It is all low fence but the elk have been pushed down off Grand Mesa and out of the White River National Forests on to private land hay meadows.

Even the rocks don't last forever.

There are over the counter cow elk units in Colorado. Lots of land owner permits that don't require the hunter to draw as well.

Thanks for the information, the units I have hunted did not have over the counter cow tags.

Call Vermajo and get a list of the outfitters that hunt cow elk there

Im sure Kiows Tim Bearclaw doesn't have the cow hunting exclusive in there

Call Tristateoutfitters out of Raton they hunt the T-O ranch but I'd bet anything they are booked up

C-S Cattle ranch south of Raton near Cameron hunt cow elk too
