Hi Guys and Gals

Some of you will remember that a couple of years ago a Searcy double was raffled on this great board. I was the lucky winner and finally received my rifle earlier this year. I have done a moderate amount of load development work and following Butches advice settled on 90 gr RL15 behind a Woodleigh 500 gr projectile. (Its a 470)

I thought I would post a couple of photos of its first kill. I let my best friend do the honors as he will probably never have a double of his own. This old Bull was shot at about 85 paces with a soft point. Went to take off at a great rate of knotts, took about 3 steps and fell over dead.

Regards.

GG

Thats a nice looking rifle. You are one lucky guy!

Good that we can get RL powders at the moment, eh? Hope you have stocked up as you know how Mr Murphy works...

Well done to your friend as well.

Regards

Hey GG, Congratulations on winning the rifle and congratulations to your buddy on the kill.

Having your buddy make the "First Kill" with the rifle is an outstanding way to remember the exact animal killed. Nice idea indeed.

How far was the shot and were you all having to sneak up on the Bull? Doesn't look like much "cover" in the background.

How long are the barrels?

Can you shoot it without hearing protection?

How much does it weigh - loaded?

Congratulations again.

Good looking rifle indead.
Wish I could shoot some [ok well ALL] of the cows on my deer lease, they are a pest.
Do you Aussies take the meat home from these scrub bulls?

OK here is how the hunt unfolded.

We saw this old bull about 50m out into the open plain you can see in the photo. He was with a heap of cows and calves and there were a few more bulls and scattered groups dotting the plain. The breeze was ok but not perfect and the old Bull new we were there. We decided to back track and cross a small clearing into a stand of light timber. Once in the timber we were able to slowly make some ground on the bull. We got to the edge of the timber and estimated the Bull was within range so Bob took the shot as the Bull stood slightly quartering towards us. The old fella went to take off but only went a couple of paces before piling up. The soft point Woodleigh had gone in at the left shoulder and we found it in the flesh behind the right front leg. It weighed 380 grains and must have hit some big bones to lose that much weight. We paced the range to about 85 long strides.

These are really rank old bulls and the meat is pretty much inedible. Often we use the carcase as a bait for feral pigs, coming back a week or so later.

Will try to get around to grtting some decent photos of the engraving etc - I do have some but they are pretty ordinary.

Cheers.

GG

The barrels are 24" and she weighs 10lbs.
