I was looking at a recent dealers catolog and saw were 270 winchester cor-locs are $10 and change a box when bought by the 10 box lot. thats awful cheap. having been raised on ace hardware bought remington ammo in the 660 population town in AR i began hunting in, i have killed many a deer and pig with such. wondering if you guys would like to post some pics of animals you took with core-locs, silvertips or old flat base soft points back in the day.

No pics handy but have taken about 15 antelope and 25 - 30 deer exclusively with 130 grain cor-locs. Switched to hand loading them about 12 years ago. Never, ever had anything like a bullet failure. Velocity guestimate based on reloading book is about 2900 fps Enjoy your cor-locs!

You're gonna die! You're gonna die! You're gonna die! EVERYONE knows you no longer can kill a 100# deer with a standard bullet. Haven't you read about all the "bullet failures" despite perfect shots. You must be using a boutique bullet manufactured by elves under a hollow log, costing at least a dollar a pop and if your rifle isn't shooting sub MOA groups (with a Leuy or eurotrash scope), you might as well stay home.

I haven't hunted with factory ammo for over twenty years, but I did kill the first dozen or so deer with plain-jane Remingtion, Winchester, and Federal ammo. All performed well. Today, in my deer hunting handloads with "rifles" I use Sierra Pro-Hunters or Hornady Interlock bullets and have had good results. I shoot Nosler Ballistic tips almost exclusively in my pistols that shoot bottleneck cartridges and XTP's for the straightwalls. IMHO, you don't need a premium bullet on deer. X

I have shot a few deer and a couple of elk with 150gr. cor-locs. Hand loads and factory. In the early 90's I could buy a 20 round box at wally world in Cody for $7.30. It was cheap brass if nothing else. I never had trouble with them. I would buy bulk bullets from midway and reload them to. Cheap shooting.

In the early '80's I bought a case of 30'06 round noses at a store closing for $5.00 per box. That's what killed my next 100+ deer. Never a loss & rarely more than 10yds of tracking. Then I started handloading & went to hell.

KS - wasn't sure if you were joking or just saw the photo wrong, so here is an explanation: the biggest exit wound of those three was on the smallest deer - it was about the size of a quarter and came from a 150-grain roundnose (remington) on a .30/30. coincidently, that shot was between 200 and 225 yards. i'd call that pretty good for a .30/30. my deer, the larger doe, was a head shot (145-grn winchester power point out of a 7x57) from the same distance as the other doe (they were laying down; when i shot, the smaller one stood up and my boy shot her). the top of her head was gone, but i can't exactly count that as an exit wound since there was no discernible entry or exit. the buck was shot right at the base of the neck (140 or 150-grain (can't remember which) remington psp from a .280). when we finally found it, the exit on the other side was maybe the size of a nickel, if that. on all three deer, there was no loss of meat. the red you're seeing was from the field dressing, and there were sticks holding the chests open, which may cause them to look a little different. if you were just pulling my leg, i'm going to feel like a north-dakotan dumbass!

I shoot reloads almost exclusively these days but they were all factory rounds before they were reloads... TomP Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right, when wrong to be put right. Carl Schurz (1829 - 1906)

Killed my first deer with a 170gr corloct from a 30-30. I have killed several with the winchester power point as well. Now a days I shoot SSTs almost exclusivly. I ask myself why sometimes when the average shot where I hunt is less than 50 yards and more likely 20! This is where the old roundnose bullets shine. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

Made my longest kill with a 150 grn Core-Loct from an 30-06 Remington Automatic I'm serious, that inaccurate POS Rem auto w/ junky old Redfield 3x9 30/30 reticle and the POS Rem CLs dispatched my pronghorn buck on the spot at just over 450 yards! Dad was just above me ranging with one of those out of date inaccurate Redfield ranging reticles and telling me my hold-over The bullet didn't even bounce off, the gun didn't jam, and my hold-over worked Right behind the shoulder and down for the count, I'll never forget it. I killed piles of animals with Core-Locts before I began reloading. Of course now I hunt with handloaded super duper premium bullets, bolt rifles, expensive high powered scopes, lazer range finders, etc etc You gotta love today's marketing.... Reloader

I buy 180 gr. RN Corelokts by the 500 lots for my 308 and 30-06. Have used them for years and they work on about everything I have used them on and that is an extensive list on both sides of the big ocean. I buy corelokts, 140 gr I believe, for my 7x57 and have found them to be ideal for Whitetails. TerryR
i'd say look at those exit wounds. Jesus Harold Christ on a unicycle.
Taz didn't tell ya he was using a 50 Caliber Barrett with a 680 grain Hollow Point on that deer.. his 20 mm cannon was in the shop at the time so he had to use what was available...

I can remember, back in the day, the only deer camp conversation about bullets was cor loks vs. silver tips. Most seem to use Remmies, probably due to availability and price more than anything. Now, 25 years later, it seems kinda funny that this conversasion is on the net with a little hint of "how'd we ever do it"

Gee I thought this was the accurate RELOADING forum. Performance with Rem. Corelocs is what drove me to handloading. I buy at least 1 box of factory with every gun to take a pressure ring sample. That is the last they see. Gianni

FWIW,I have hunted with 150 gr cor-lok's and have had great success using them in my 270. Everything I aimed at died, I still have some in my bag somewhere and would not have a problem loading up with them again. Sorry no pictures but lots of memories with them. You don't have to be the best shot....Just the last shot.
